Just found out this morning that the group that was run down by the dump truck is a group I belong to and have ridden with many times. My friend Paul was not involved as he was at work but his wife Dayle is one of the ones in critical condition. I just had some beers with them last weekend. Dayle was on her own bike, I guess she was able to take the day off and Paul wasn't. Paul was one of my friends that did not respond to my email yesterday when I sent one out asking if everyone was ok. I am on my way to John C. Lincoln Hospital, I am sure Paul is there, this is not going to be easy. Need thoughts and prayers from ya'll.

Very difficult to look at... difficult to imagine all the death and pain caused in 2 seconds.

The picture of the empty boots sitting there says a lot about all the emptiness that's now in the lives of lots of loved ones and friends of that group.

Westernbiker- please pass along to your friend's wife my prayers to all involved....

Very sad...

Hey,

I know you feel sick to your stomach.  You must, ‘cause I sure do.

I’ve got a CDL; I can not for the life of me imagine what was so important that the truck driver couldn’t watch the road and drive.  Hope he goes to jail for a long time.

Brian the company name is " Blue Sky Sanitation " .

FD: 3 dead, 6 critical after Carefree Highway crash

PHOENIX – Police have identified three people killed in a massive wreck in north Phoenix Thursday afternoon.

Clyde R. Nachand, 67, Stephen Punch, 52, and Daniel L. Butler, 35, were killed while sitting at a stop light when their motorcycles were struck by a commercial truck near 27th Drive and Carefree Highway.

Six other were seriously or critically injured.

One of those injured, 52-year-old Phoenix Fire Captain Ernie Lizarraga remains in critical condition, according to Phoenix Police spokesman Luis Samudio

Samudio said a 47-year-old woman also remains in critical condition.

A 39-year-old woman, 35-year-old man, and another male are in serious condition, according to police.

Samudio said another male, 48 years old, was treated and released from the hospital.

Police have not released their identities.

The driver of the truck has been identified as Michael J. Jakscht, 46 years old.

Samudio said Thursday that the driver of the large sanitation dump truck was eastbound on Carefree Highway when he failed to control his speed and collided with the rear of the eight motorcycles and four other vehicles.

Witnesses reportedly told officials the motorcycle riders were dragged 50 to 75 yards.

Some of the motorcycles burst into flames under the dump truck, while others ended up scattered behind the truck.

"I saw the fire go up and black smoke off the truck, I saw motorcycles and people all over the pavement," said John Cox, who witnessed the crash.

Other drivers involved in the incident said it was a disturbing and horrific scene they'll never forget.

"I didn't see him (dump truck) coming, we had just come to a full stop there, then boom," said Glenn Werlau. "Then I saw bodies lying underneath it (dump truck) and, oh God, it was horrible."

The three riders killed were trapped under the truck, said Phoenix Fire Department spokesman Jonathan Jacobs.

Phoenix Fire Department Deputy Chief Frank Salomon said he knows Lizarraga very well. They "grew up" in the Department together.

Salomon added that Lizarraga, a 22-year veteran, was scheduled to work Thursday but took a vacation day in order to presumably take advantage of the good weather and join the others on the ride.

He said none of the other riders are employed by the Phoenix Fire Department.

Phoenix Public Safety Manager Jack Harris said, "I have never seen such a horrific accident involving so many motorcycles."

Samudio said Jakscht, the driver of the Blue Sky Sanitation truck, received minor injuries and showed no signs of impairment.

ABC15 has learned Jakscht was cited in 2005 for operating a truck with excess weight and in 2006 for having parts or accessories operating in an unsafe or improper condition.

In 2009, while driving a Blue Sky Sanitation truck, Jakscht was cited for not having a fire extinguisher, no pre-trip inspection and failure to inspect emergency equipment.

That case was dismissed by the Scottsdale City Attorney because their office felt there was not a reasonable likelihood of conviction.

Jakscht currently has two pending speeding tickets, both issued this month.

On Friday, Samudio said the accident is still under investigation and that it will be some time before detectives determine what charges or citations may be filed.

Today; My friend who was suppose to be on the ride went to the hospital. The woman in critical condition is brain dead and they're keeping her alive for family to come and say goodbye. The fire capt might be brain dead too. The docs aren't conclusive on that yet. My friend is a wreck, needless to say.

This tragedy brings to mind a similar one that happened near the Lenoir North Carolina ride a year or

two back.

An impaired driver (DRUNK) hit three Harley's at a stop light killing all three.

I was in the motel room and just caught part of the report.

The sad truth is the motorcycle rider or riders get the worst of it.

We all wonder why people aren't more careful, but what can you say but Prayers from here as well.

God Bless the Families of the Fallen and injured.
