Now SPOFF got me thinking about my final drive again. He has riden on a worn drive for 8 years. The question is how do you accurately measure the condition of your splines? Is it with the free play? Any one out there have any input on this? I still haven't bought a different drive. I'm not sure about the one from pinwall with 60K on it. It would be much easier if I could look at it and see the condition first hand. mnrider

MN,

You need to look at both the spline that attaches to the wheel side (with the 5 'pins'), and the hub splines...

I could see that my wheel side splines were worn down, but once I looked at my hub side, where the splines mate, I knew there was no question I needed to replace both parts.

Here is a pic of my old splines...  Notice how the teeth seem to be worn down and 'pointed'?

Now, here is a pic of the hub I got through Pinwall...  Notice how nice and 'square' the teeth are?

The wheel side splines looked just as bad...  Those I ordered new from HDL, for about $120.

Hope this helps.

Hey Thanks for the reply and the pictures. I did find a drive from a vrcc member that had triked out a 2000 valk with 18K on it. Looks like we'll be back on the road soon with some good parts. Yeah I will be using some synthetic lube and Moly on the splines. Really appreciate all of the input and ideas I got on this site! I have been reading it for quite awhile am glad to go on line. Thaks again, Mnrider
