I never smoked so I cannot even guess how hard it is to quite.

For all you folks that want to, are going to and have quite, GOOD LUCK AND GOD SPEED. I sincerely hope that everyone that wants to quite, does quite and that it gets easier every day. Here's hoping everyone makes it. Hang tough folks. Thanks Pete.

I bought my last pack the day I bought my 2000 I/S........ haven't bought a pack since and being in Michigan, at $6.00+ a pack, I'll have made up the difference between what I sold my 85 Goldwing and what I paid for the Valk in about 4 years.  That what I call "creative" financing...... Evil

My mother in law quit, my aunt quit, and a good friend from high school quit at age 35, my father quit 20 years ago.

The problem was, they all died of lung cancer.

For those of you that haven’t started, what’s the attraction?

Hey guys, I just buried my Mom two days ago.  Cry   She passed away due to COPD, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases.  One of which is Emphysema.  She smoked since she was a teenager and was 67 when she passed.   I don't want to see that happen to anyone here.  If you are trying, I wish you all the luck and ask you to stay the course even when it gets tough.

I quit 2 years ago this week Wink.  I have COPD with emphysema and asthma...30 plus years of smoking.   Oh, and heart problems.  The cigarettes done their damage, but no more.

Those who have tried to quit and failed, Chantix worked like a miracle for me.

X Ring, sorry to hear about your Mom.

Well, I'm trying to join this club of non-smokers. Was in the hospital last Thursday and Friday due to chest pains. Come to find out it's not my heart or lungs that the cigs are hurting. It's my esophogus and stomach. BUT the docs told me to: quit smoking, quit drinking and lose a lot of weight. No bread, no beef, no pork, etc. Basically, if it tastes good I have to spit it out.  Angry

Hi All My eldest had bad asthma.A little over 20 years ago ,I got the elbow in the ribs at night from my wife,Sue, waking me to tell me that my eldest was "Wheezing" Got both of us dressed and took him to the hospital and put on a ventalator for abit.Everything was fine. An hour later ,at home, the wheezing started again ,so off we went.Twice in one night in the hospital. I did smoke alot back then but was carefull not to be around my son but I guess I was just fooling myself. I realized that I had to be on call all the time, just in case.So twenty years ago, last Wednesday,I had my last smoke and drink too(I also enjoyed a pint or two). Did it for my son and  I swear, not a smoke or drink in twenty years. I have been asked why I have 3 Valks and my answer is that Sue lets me but also because "No Smoke,No Drink"

ONE YEAR TOMORROW.........
Probably ranks right up there on my top ten list of best things I’ve accomplished.

1. Marry Helen
2. Buy motorcycle
3. Quit smoking
4.
5.

(The first one is so far ahead of the others, it should be on a list of its own.)

I told some co-workers I was thinking about buying a pack on the one year anniversary and smoking the whole pack to celebrate.  They asked, “you’re not really thinking about doing that, are you?”

I said, “Of course I’m thinking about it.  Kinda like adultery.  I never have, don't believe I ever will, but that doesn’t stop me from thinking about it every day.”

--------------------------------------------------

This may be my last post in this thread.  Hopefully someone else can post his or her success story and keep the thread alive.

Good luck to all the quitters.

Congratulations bludragon.  I think the $5 to $6 a pack helps ease the pain of quitting.

Willow and Chromedome, read my last post more closely.  Thinking about it does not equal doing it.  I like to think about smoking after sex with ______________ (usually Jamie Lee Curtis).

I did not smoke today.

I'll make another post in this thread in 6 months to congratulate the new (or old) quitters.

And do not even think about telling me about better choices than Jamie Lee Curtis.  (I've been in love with Jamie Lee for over 30 years, almost as long as I had been smoking.)

Stick a fork in me, I'm done!

As I just posted a self portrait (elsewhere) with a smoke in my mouth, I thought I post here that I am now almost four weeks tobacco free.

I had asked here about people's experience with Chantix, and I got a script for two months and stayed with it for six weeks till I quit.  It made me a little sick and sleepy most of the time, but did help with quitting.  Took an early retirement a short while back, and promised myself to quit so I could live to enjoy it.... and afford to live on a reduced pension.

Thirty years of tobacco is enough.   I still crave the sh!t daily but I've made it, and am quit for good.

Jess it is always good to hear a successful "quit smoking story"...without a doubt, quitting smoking was one of the most difficult things I ever did.  That was 19 years ago...and I am so glad I stuck with it.

I used to get so mad at myself for buying a pack of cigarettes that after smoking one, I would crumble the rest of the pack up and throw it in the garbage can at the office.  Two hours later I would be in even more pissed at myself for breaking my cigarettes and I would resort to digging in the trash and putting scotch tape on them so I could get a couple of puffs.  This ritual provided cheap amusement for others in my office as they watched my addiction play out!!

As far as Chantix go....I have no experience, but don't "aks" me about her sisters Laquisha and Chantell  (sorry, I couldn't resist)................

This was obviously a LONG time ago. You would NOT be crumbling up cigarettes and throwing 'em away at today's prices! Wink

I can NOT put into words the price of smoking. Smoking for many years has cost me untold pleasures and things that I can not do at this stage in life.
Stress will help stop you from quitting, so get rid of it and quitting will be a little better. Sounds easy but "NOT". Wishing the best to all that are "QUITTING".   cooldude

Nothing beats a 6-pack!

« Reply #273 on: June 17, 2010, 04:51:48 PM »

I quit Ocober 28, 2009. Chantix did it for me. I used it for just over a week before I quit, and about 3 days after. Never looked back. Pack a day, for over 40 years, gone, just like that. I had it down to a science, I knew EXACTLY how many cigs left, exactly WHEN I'd have to get to a store, before running out, and exactly to the penny, how much money I'd have to have, to keep me in cigs through the week, until payday. Hmmm....pop....or enough for smokes...no brainer, no pop!

After the week on Chantix, I realized that a pack had lasted me over two days, which hadn't happened in 30+ years, and I felt I could stretch the pack out the rest of the day, just a couple over the next 5 or six hours, unheard of before that day. I also figured, that if I didn't buy any that night, on the way home from work (midnight), that I wouldn't need any the next day, either. So, I didn't. I hope EVERYONE has it as easy as I did!! Dont crave them at all, don't bother me to sit with people that are smoking. The added advantage is that my daughter, 28 years old, smoking for 13 years, saw that I quit, and quit hereself, cold turkey, the next month! Hasn't smoked since, either. Two birds with one stone! It DID take my wife about two weeks to realize I wasn't smoking anymore, though...and she only figured that out, because I had quite a bit of my "allowance" left after two weeks - about $70 that I wouldn't have had, smoking. $150 a month, to choke myself to death...

Loving life without them...

Good luck to ALL that are quitting.

I quit the same day that Kennedy was assassinated.  My wife smoked on for for many more years.

I lost her at age 68 in 2002 due to COPD.  I've lost two smoking friends in the last 3 years due to small cell lung cancer. A fast way to go but not painlessly.

I quit cold turkey and stopped drinking beer and coffee because of the association. I chewed gum, toothpicks, and drank tea.  The craving went away after a year.

It must've worked.  I inherited asthma but have it under control and I'm still here at 83 and still riding some.

Find yourself a reason for quitting, don't let your mind persuade you other wise, and stay the course,  It's hard but it  can be done.  IMHO RIDING AND LIVING is more important than smoking.

Its wild that everyone's assumption is the reason I'm in the hospital with a collasped lung is because of smoking...It's not in fact the doctor was amazed at how my lungs looked after all the years I've poured smoke across them . I'm 7 days clean and its my plan to never fire another one up . While smoking may or may not have played a role in me being here in the hospital I'm smart enough to see all the other folks on this " LUNG WARD " that are dying a very painful death everyday  Sad

Joe, some of us are pretty sure that a pneumothorax isn't the result of smoking, but we do believe that an injured lung, even healed, may be more susceptible to the damage done by tar and nicotine.

You have made the right observations and being seven days clean is a huge beginning.

My observations on smoking cessation are that quitting "cold turkey" is the most likely to succeed; beginning to see yourself and define yourself as a nonsmoker is key; and that it's much easier if everyone in the household quits at the same time.

I don't like the term, collapsed lung.  It sounds too passive.  The lung is actually pressed down and restricted by the presence of external air in the chest cavity and it HURTS.  I whined like I never thought I would and once or twice I even begged them to give me more painkillers.  It's definitely an event that can change who you think you are.

Your reference to a painful death reminds me of the famous quote, "I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my grandpa, not screaming in terror like his passengers."

May you live long, Joe, and may you hold Presley's children on your knees.

Hang tough, Joe.  One day you'll look back and see many good things that came out of this painful experience.

then when your cancer dr. tells you you will be dead in 60 days, you have all the incentive you needed to quit. worked for me without any patches. but i also had 100,000 CMA members praying for me - entirely too many folks for God to dissapoint !
