After I got my wheels back from polishing yesterday I thought I had better replace the bearings before refitting them. Pulled the fronts no problem pulled the single bearing rear no problem. Pulled the double row rear and found it rusty on the inside and that the spacer tube was also rusty on the outside. Picked the wheel off the bench and about half a cup of water poured out.

How did it get there? What do you think? Is this unique or something I need to watch for in the future?

The splines and final drive are all fine as is the axle shaft, only 17k miles on a 96 standard.

Don't think so as it had been in there for some while (the rust) and none in the front wheel.

Do you use a pressure washer to give the beast a bath? Could be one explanation.

I have even washed it let alone pressure washed it,  Wink  but I have only owned it since September and it has been in pieces since then. I doubt that the previous owner did as it was in such a mess BUT maybe the shop that I bought it from did.

Oh well must be JOOTT.

I would bet the water is from a air supply that has not been drained / blown out for a long time. My compresser will spit out water if I don`t drain ever so often.  Roll Eyes

Huh???  I think he is talking inside the wheel (behind the wheel bearings/seals) and not in the tire area.  Undecided

Any possibility it could have been a Katrina bike?

Thanks guys for the thoughts and suggestions.  cooldude

It was new in 96 and taken to the UK in 96 so it was not a Katrina bike and it was water in the centre of the wheel behind the bearings NOT in the tyre.

Any way not to worry it seems as though it was a pretty unique problem and as I am now only a fir weather rider  Wink I hopefully won't have to worry about it again.
