Had a close call today....City has been putting down tar in cracks in the roads and since it was in the lower 90's here in West Texas today, I guess some of the stuff started to melt again....I was turning off of a main roadway onto a side street to go see my brother, and as I leaned into the turn, the front tire on the Interstate slipped a LOT....I don't know how I managed to keep from going down, but my right tennis shoe almost got the toe of it ripped off and I jammed my right knee and hip really hard....I'm in a fair amount of pain, but at least I didn't crash the bike!!!  Thank you Lord!!!!

Been out of work for a year now, and sure don't want to have a wreck and tear the bike OR me up!!!

Just goes to show you that you can't be too careful out there!  Everyone stay alert and keep the shiney side up!

Good to hear that you escaped going down.  Sorry that you are still stove up from the near-miss.  Take it easy and rest up.

But you can be not quite careful enough.  Honestly, tennis shoes and big cruisers aren't a real good combination.     Undecided

Close call Dag!  Glad to hear the outcome wasn't worse, would have been even better if you did'nt endure injury/pain!  Good reaction and skills test, sounds like you scored very high!.

Dress for he crash and not for the ride?

I try to... but when it gets that hot... I just can't sometimes...

Yeah, I thought about the Tennis Shoes and no Jacket and Gloves when the incident was happening...wishing I had the boots and Jacket and Gloves on....but it was such a nice day and all I was planning on doing was going to my Accountant to pick up my Tax Return which contained a small surprise in a VERY SMALL refund this year....After not being employed for a year, that was quite a surprise in itself....

Lesson learned, even a short trip requires all of the riding gear....Just in Case!!!!

Just my opinion!
I will let the bike fall over rather than stick out my leg even on a low speed flop.  You can do real damage to hip/knee/ankle.  I would rather replace some chrome on the engine guards.
A guy I work with almost died in a one vehicle <5mph crash.  Slipped on some gravel and stuck his leg out.  Broke his femur and NEARLY cut his femoral artery.  That was 10 years ago, he still walks with a gimp and has never sat on a bike since.

Harry Hurt said many years ago "tell me what kind of crash you're gonna have and I'll tell you what to wear"  Very true.  As for me I ride with the full stuff.  Definitely no shoes with shoelaces. Caught my shoelaces in the shifter one time and almost went down.

As you know, watch the tar snakes. If the sealant is put on too thick, it will squirm under a tire in hot weather.  Ok for cars but not for motorcycles.

Glad you didn't fall.

Just to avoid my being overly hypocritical, I need to come clean and let you know I've ridden without gloves and in a tee shirt (maybe less) and I may again.

I've been known to ride in loafers.

I heard that a majority of injury accidents happen within 25 miles of home, so I'm looking to rent some garage space 30 miles out.   Wink

Holy crap !!
Your bike couldn't navigate over some crack tar ?
You must have been riding a Honda Valkyrie !!

I left a flipflop at a stop sign one time many years ago.  Since then, I won't wear anything less than a full sandal, complete with the adjustable velcro straps.

I never could see the need to zip on a black body bag on a hot day.   In the event of an accident, the EMT's would just have to cut it off before putting me in theirs anyway.   Grin

I've budged a bit on my views of helmet wear this past couple years, though I suspect it's more out of respect for my  thinning hair and having sunburned up top a time or more.  Roll Eyes
