I keep getting security warning every time I boot up the pc and again when I go on line. Says it's from the XP security center. I am running XP but I thought I remembered reading somewhere (maybe here) that any such warnings would be from Microsoft (not XP or IE or etc.). The window that comes up wants me to click on a link to register an unregesistered version of XP security. I'm thinkin if I click on that button that I will be infected. I have McAfee secrity. Had McAfee run a scan and it found no threats. What to do ?

If you have a legitimate copy of XP and Bill Gates wants you to click on something, I'd say click on it...
* wants me to click on a link to register an unregesistered version of XP security.
I'm not sure what that could be... you could show it to us if you wanted to:
- window comes up
- mash "print screen"
- open paint
- mash "paste"
- save the file as a jpg or gif
post the image...

I wouldn't click on it. I had a virus on my work computer that sounds just like that one. After you click on it, you won't be able to view any webpages, and other stuff starts to lock up. I was "working" from home and therefore without the protection of the company firewall. They had a heck of a time getting rid of it. I believe it actually came from www.msnbc.com. After this happened and I would go to that site, one of their advertisements was blocked by my company firewall indicating a virus was detected. I cut/pasted a screenshot like hubcapsc described, and sent it to msnbc. According to our TO guys, they said that hackers sometimes can take out a legitimate looking ad and have a virus embedded in it and there is really little to no protection against that.

Warnning, don't click on it cause it's a virus!
I think BigAlOfMD is right... you can google on "register an unregistered version of XP security" and find a bunch of people talking about what seems like the same thing you're talking about... There's some malware removal programs that will probably get it, SUPERAntispyware is one... -Mike

Thanks for the response men. would have got back to ya sooner but I've had other things going on. So, I clicked on the superantispyware link and downloaded the free version. Thought I was home free 'cause the popup warnings went away. BUT, now I cannot open most of my programs/applications (not sure of proper terminology ). Almost everything I try to open, I get the window asking me what I want to use to open this program. Nothing I choose opens the program. WTF did I do wrong ?

There are numerous nonresident antivirus programs that you can double check against McAfee. No one program catches everything! A IT friend put me onto MalwareBytes. I've also been using the MS Security Essentials, AdAware, and Spyblaster. It is STILL possible to get "infections" with all that.

Do yourself a favor and do a Google search on the topic, To the best of my knowledge you do not need to registrar Microsoft security programs. Clinking on an unknown link could install a Trojan horse which may have been downloaded earlier. Some times these programs will take over your computer at boot up. If that happens, you may need to reformat your hard drive. Good Luck.....

Thanks again to all who have replied. I believe Chilli got me on the right track but so far I have not been able to fix it. Tomorrow I'm gonna try and get up with a guru I used to work with. Hope he can talk me thru it on the phone. I can do a fair job fixin stuff with wrenches but I'm kinda inept with a keyboard and a mouse.

I came close a couple of times to clicking on that button. What finally convinced me not to was my version of XP is legitimate and is regestered. Didn't make sense that I could have an unregistered version of XP security. Proof that a little bit of brains and a bunch of luck will get you by.
