When I got on the throttle this morning (typical) I noticed a tapping sound coming from the left side of the engine...when I back off it goes away?

I am thinking carbs...anyone got any ideas??

Header bolts?

That's the first thing I'd look at as well!

Could be the valves. Is it desmogged? Rev it and listen at the carbs and then at the valve cover. Might pin point it. My guess if it happened all of a sudden it might be the smog stuff. Let us know.

Well...let's break it down...you will get tapping noise from the following sources...

Header...

Lifters...

Vacuum Leak...

Since you checked the header bolts...the only other option is the exhaust gasket.

Lifters...they could be out of adjustment...when have you checked them?

Vacuum leak...boy...this one could be fun...check your hoses, your pair valve and smog tubes...if you haven't desmogged yet.  If you have, then check your plugs on your desmog.

Thanks Joe,

it is not de-smogged, replaced the header gasket when i had the exhaust off from removing and replacing the rear tire last Spring. I have never checked the lifters, but I would have thought I would have heard them all the time even at idle...not 100% about though. Replaced all vac hose last year...but will check them again...

I can only reproduce the sound when under load, and hard on the throttle...when I back off it goes away...I will have more to play with it over the weekend, will check and double check every thing...

thanks for the input, I will keep you posted...

Usually tapping noise under load is a vacuum leak or exhaust leak.  So I would start with that.  Remember, your pair valve operates from a vacuum.  If it is bad, then it could be what is causing the tick.  The way to find out if it is the problem is to remove the vac tubes from 3 and 4 intakes.  Make sure you plug the intakes.

Got a little longer wrench and checked the exhaust again, one not tightened on the left bank and THREE not tightened on the right side. I only heard the noise from the left side....

Thanks guys...

Now, should I get my hearing checked???? Evil
