Excessive comfort breeds weakness. PttP

WWW
« on: April 02, 2010, 11:21:24 AM »

For those of us that missed the "excitement" here's the story.

One of our members posted a link to someone else's website (Thanks, Paul).  The owner of the website joined our board so he could sign up for a little gratuitous publicity.  When his link was removed, he took exception and incited his friends on an automobile enthusiasts' board to sign up and in their words, "cause some havoc".

Our registration process is really very informal and doesn't protect us from much, but it does slow down the professional spammers.

These trolls were not professional spammers and really not very hard to spot, what with the small words and all, but it stretched out for longer than it probably should have.  It didn't hurt much.  As Scott says, they were just having a little fun at our expense.  Our payment was small and their enjoyment was apparently of significant value.  They had quite a discussion on their own board about how much fun they were having.

Apparently the little fellow who started the ruckus doesn't like me much.  At one point he acknowledged that I may have eyes, but not much of a brain.  Based upon their comments, a few of them are desirous of experiencing sexual relations with us.

The long and short of it is we'll still get a few trolls registering and when we're pretty certain that they're not really interested in the Valkyrie or in being a positive contributor to the VRCC community they'll be unregistered.

I've no problem with any of you visiting the little fellow's website.  He seems to take particular pride in his activity counters.  I do, however insist that you type the address into your browser.

He has some humor at his site as some of you already know.  You can find him at w e e v i l l e . c o m.

I just thought you might want an explanation of why we suddenly had an influx of new members who appeared to have little or no knowledge of the Valkyrie (I may have used an unnecessary prepositional phrase) and why they seem to have as quickly disappeared.

That's why.   Wink

While the explanation was nice, it wasn't necessary.  As a past moderator on a different forum, I can understand completely that you have a (pretty much thankless) job here to do and you can't be bothered by the simpletons out there that just want to cause trouble.  Good riddance to bad rubbish...

So...I say to you and your fellow Moderators/Admins...

Thank You for doing the job you do to keep this forum a nice place to visit.

Thanks, guys, for your comments.

I do want to make it clear that despite the appearance I really wasn't trolling for compliments (or even approval).  I really did just want to inform those who were wondering.

Honestly, I was just the one who pissed them off.  Scott does the real work.    Smiley

Sung to the tune, "Rawhide" (obviously I hope)

Trollin' Trollin' Trollin'

Keep ‘em boilin’, boilin’
Though they're disapprovin',
Keep them doggies boilin’Rawhide!

Don't try to understand 'em,
Just find and throw and ban 'em,
Soon we'll be riding high and wide.
But my heart's a calculatin'
Bad posts will be waitin', be waiting at the end of my ride.

Move 'em on, ban 'em up,
Ban 'em up, move 'em out,
Move 'em on, ban 'em out Rawhide!
Ban 'em out, ride 'em in
Ride 'em in, ban 'em out,
Cut 'em out, ride 'em in Rawhide.

Trollin', Trollin', Trollin'
Trollin', Trollin', Trollin'
Trollin', Trollin', Trollin'
Trollin', Trollin', Trollin'

I am one of those who was wondering what was happening, so I appreciate the explanation.  Obviously I was oblivious to what was going on...I had simply dismissed these folks as simply not being too bright.

Ridin weather has gotten here in full force along with the bugs and pollen. Course, it's always ridin weather down south. BTW, great job Carl and Scott.

My appologies to you Carl,Scott & members here....I had posted the web site of the painter trying to solicit on our forum. A couple of members had asked about where he was located..and with out thinking I posted the guys website (which was listed below his name on here, so no big secret)  Sometimes when you think your doing the right thing, it ends up being the wrong thing. As a business owner myself I see how he would want his services recognized as being of great qaulity by the members here. I can also see the need to SCREEN the contents of the posts (which has to be huge task!). Basically what I am saying is..he should of not been soliciting on here, and I shouldn't of encouraged it.  I also want to express my thanks to the forum administrators  for making this such a great site to participate on.

Thanks, Tony, but we're not looking for suggestions.  As for now we'll just take out the trash when it shows up.

Different forum, Tony.  If you really want to know send me a PM and I'll point you to it.

You guys do a fantastic job of keeping this site a joy.
I go to enough "political" places, but I do enjoy the occasional polijoust here.
I come here for Valktalk.
I really want to meet some of the folks here and do some ridin with folks that can keep up.
