What are everyones thought on the use of octane boosters? I used CD4 in my old yamaha Venture ( absolutely hated hot weather and slow speed loads, sounded like maracas!) with good results, but I haven't found any threads here yet. Anyone out there trying some of the compounds designed to help higher compression engines live?

Valks, Wings and VTX's are low compression motors. It's a waste of money to boost octane. Most here use Techron or Sea Foam once in a while to keep the fuel system clean. Just put 87 octane in the old girl and ride it. After 112K miles in all temps and altitudes, I've had no running problems.

Ran the 104 from the local Auto parts stores for a while, but all it did is turn my plugs orange, and still would here pinging, It only 'UPs' the octane .07 of a point, Not what most people think so 90 octane will go up to 90.7, I don't really see a need to use in Unblown motor @ $ 9-11.00 a bottle, and i think it fouls my plugs faster sometimes, Yesterday i just bought some Lucas Octane Boost and am trying it, i was also using the 2 stroke additive from the Honda shop. i only run octane when i ride solo and having fun, i don't need it when on long trips with my Wife, not Hammering it.

Unless you are running a trigger wheel. My SV has the 4* and knocks pretty badly with regular or mid grade.

I have a 4 deg wheel also. I read somewhere that valks are suppost to be fed high test fuel. This last tank I put premimun fuel in it and the bike responded to it noticeably, smoother idle and better low speed response. I might give the CD4 a try again (still have half a bottle left from the venture days) I don't trust idiot lights so when I got the bike one of the first things I did was install good quality oil and temp gauges. I was supprised at how high the coolant temp gets before the fan kicks on (230deg F.) and cruises between 185 and 210. With hotter summer weather and poor ethenol blends the norm here in Missouri , I am just a little concerned about long term preignition. It dosn't detonate which is catistrophic , but prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Hey Deez , here in San Antonio they had just started selling that ethanol crap back in Oct....... I have always run Super unleaded in my Valk before and after I added the trigger wheel and one time I tried some plain reg. gas and my ol Fat Lady pinged and did not run right with the reg gas .... I took it out and saved it for the lawn mower ........ I have use Super unleaded 93 octane ever since and she purrrrr's and as long as I stay at 3000 rpm's I have getting 38 to 40 mpg , I have checked it three times just be sure , any faster I'm getting 30 mpg ...... now with this 10 % ethanol crap my Valk runs like I have water in the gas and does not run right ...... now I tried sea foam ( dynamite stuff ) nothing happened , I tried the techron fuel additive ( not the fuel injector version ) which I have used in the past and it made the old Fat Lady get up and go ( before the ethanol showed up ) but this time it did not work ..... so now I'm using a little 104 octane booster every fill-up and we're running like before , no pinging , no stumbling , no more running rough , nothing just purrrring like new ...... I use the 104 octane booster in the see thru bottle that has a honey color to it ...... its cheaper than sea foam here in SA ..... I using what works for me ....... matter of fact my old Valk ran crappy when I went up tp Houston last spring , because thats all they sell is ethanol everywhere in Houston until I got out of town the exon stations sold ethanol free gas then ..... Thanks the Geez

A couple of years ago, my nephew bought a 99 I/S that had the trigger wheel change in it. It pings at low speeds acceleration if you don't down shift. I have a 99 I/S and a 2K tourer, completely stock Valkyries. You can slow to 20 MPH on either and accelerate as hard as you like with no ping or hesitation. They just haul it. No additives or boosters.

I have a 99 I/S with a 6 degree trigger wheel and frankly, I just don't hear or feel any difference using a higher octane fuel.I guess there could be fuel differences between the states. From what I have read, putting a higher octane fuel into an engine than it is designed for is as bad as putting a lower octane fuel in an engine that is designed for higher octane. Octane rating is the speed at which it will combust and if not matched properly, pinging will occur in either situation.I ride two up and ride quite aggressively and personally don't find any reason to run more than the called for-regular for me.

Yea, I really think it's a state by state issue, Missouri and a lot of midwest states a going with ethemol blends to get a cheap "octane boost" , make the available fuel go farther and help the local farm economy (several ethanol plants in Iowa,Missouri, Kansas is my understanding) My wife has a 99 Chyrsler LHS that normally runs like a watch, but every summer we experience hard hot or no restarts after a heat soak during hot days. It states right in the owners manual to NOT use ethenol blended fuel as it is terrible about vapor locking the injection system, and they are spot on! The sad thing is for a lot of us in the heat belt it's the only game in town. Which is why I started this thread. Additives are for some of us the only option we have. If the CD4 is not up to the task, I'll probably try the 104.

If you have a 6 deg wheel in an I/S, you might have a problem. The I/S ICM has a 2 deg higher advance in the midrange than a Standrad/Tourer ICM. That's why the 4 deg trigger wheels were made. Watch out for predetonation. Better yet: Buy a 4 deg wheel and change it out to be safe. I have a 99 I/S with a 6 degree trigger wheel and frankly, I just don't hear or feel any difference using a higher octane fuel.I guess there could be fuel differences between the states.
