During my winter maintenance this year I ajusted the pilot jets to 2 1/2 turns out to compensate for a flat spot in acceleration. After ajusting them and getting the bike out to see how it ran there seemed to be something not right I figured the it was the anual time for a dose of seafoam. I dropped in half a can and went on a 100 mile ride to clean out the carbs, about halfway through the ride I noticed that I was getting some backfiring in the exhaust on the left side it got worse as I rode. Then it started to miss and pop like I had a vacume leak.I thought easy fix, I changed the Vacume plugs and still ran bad then I noticed a small rubber oring and a washer the same size on top of the motor.I got out my mirror to look and found the #6 carb the pilot jet was missing. My question is has this happened to anyone else after ajusting the pilots. I have to replace the missing screw but just wondering if I should replace all of the screw sets at a cost about 90 bucks.  If anyone has a fix to prevent this from happening again please chime in . Thanks Scooter6

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

You may have thought you seated the pilot screw then back it out 2 1/2 turns and it loosened up. Might have ran into a ruff spot and thought they were seated.

I just went through an exhaustive carb rebuild and tune.  My gut feel is that you could just replace the one missing screw, and you should be good.

BTW, the popping and backfiring was from a lean carb, a very recent experience for me.  A missing airscrew would fit the symptoms.  Good luck.

Not to be picky, but the pilot screws adjust the fuel flow, not the air.  However, if the screw is completely missing, it will probably draw in air and become an "air flow".  Hence the lean condition and the popping.

This happpened to me on a road trip.  99 I/S.  I found the screw & spring on the motor valley.  (Desmogged.)  Put em back in & have not had a problem since.
Never checked the O'ring.
