Yep you are all correct, I watch my mirrors, keep in in 1st, have lights out the yang front and rear trying to be as conspicuous as possible. Always try to keep an escape route, but like it is said.
"you can't fix stupid"
Case in point. On the bayway here (I-10) the troopers/police have not been allowed to stop cars since the early 80's when a Trooper who had stopped a vehicle, was rear ended by a drunk watching the
pretty lights killing him.
Countless officers have been injured by the same action of other drivers to the point that many turn their lights off or down as to not attract too much attention.
It turns out that the driver in the accident that happened before our eyes was talking on his two way cell phone.
The part that scared me is to see if from that angle and see just how fast everything turned to DO-DO!Doing the math at 100 yards from the crest of the hill he had less than 3.5 seconds to react and stop if he was traveling 60 mph. Speed limit is 45. If doing 45mpg he had 4.5 seconds.
Now think of how long it takes to for the driver who is turning or stopped to recognize the danger in his rear view mirror calculate that the oncoming vehicle is not going to be able to stop (remember you are looking at a 2 dimensional image that does not take depth into account.)and take evasive action. Probable more than 4.5 seconds.
I plan on taking the Mrs out our next day off together to practice some more panic stops and panic starts. She has the twistys down pat.
