this has been talked about, but perhaps not this specific.  many folks talk about making sure to use moly in the drive flange lube.  some even talk about their mixes.  While others talk about jsut using a good grease, like royal purple, or some Marine type grease.

do you NEED moly in the grease? ar ethe others OK, if so, why all the mention of moly (PS the Stealer could just as easily sell jsut grease but they suggest moly?

I hate to disassemble and clean and lube to not use the right stuff.  more discussion, info?

RTM...read the manual.

Refer to Page 14-7 and 14-8 and you'll see moly specified.

good luck....

The manual says use moly paste on the flange and its corresponding fitting on the final drive.    pg 14-8

The manual says to use regular grease at the universal end of the shaft.            pg 12-18

The manual says to use moly grease (and not very much) at the pinion cup.       pg 12-19

Honda's Moly paste won't stay put for an entire rear tire life cycle. If you R&R the tire every 8,000 miles, Paste would be OK. Most rear tires (Avon/Metzler) last 12-16K miles. I have 112K miles on the original rear drive unit. It's currenty out on the bench waiting for a new Cobra. I've been using Bel Ray Waterproof grease since about 30K miles. The splines still look like new. No paste has ever been used since I bought the bike with 19K on her. Some folks order Guard Dog grease off the internet and Ratdog makes a schmooie of Moly paste and waterproof grease. The grease keeps the moly paste where Honda wants it.

My experience has been different. I've always used the Honda 60% moly paste; not that I'm partial to Honda. I would use any other brand, so long as it's paste, 60% or better. The only time I ever had dry (and rusty!) splines was at my 1st tire change. I suspect it's because they were never properly lubed either from the factory or by the dealer.

Caveats:
  1) I slather up the splines real good (just finished a tube after my 5th tire change).
  2) Clean/inspect/replace o-rings & thrust washer as needed.
  3) I wear out rear tires somewhere between 8K-11K miles.

I mix Moly and High Temp Bearing grease 50/50. It stays put and splines look great after 70k +.

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.
