Hi everybody,

I'm a newby here.  I became a VRCC member in March 09 (28055).  I bought a 97 Standard about two years ago with 2800 miles on it. The bike was laid down by the owner and never ridden.  It has cosmetic damage but overall it's in great shape.  I put about 3,000 miles on it last year, staying close at home with it because of the minor problems I seem to keep having with it.  I just want to say, this a great site.  I'm on this site all the time getting info about problems other members have similar to mine.  I think I have all the bugs worked out of it.

This week I took a big step.  I went to the Dark Side.  I did everything myself going through the whole process of front and rear tire removal, changing the tires myself, dyna beads, cleaning, inspecting, lubricating, the nut cage mod, reassembling and everything that else that goes with it.  I took it out for a test drive and everything seems to pass with flying colors.

I want to say thanks for all the people on this site who have shared their advice and knowledge with others.  I have learned so much about this bike, it was a lot of work but it was worth it.

I do have one question.  My exhaust pipes are so blue, I tried everything to clean them up with no success.  In fact, my muffler chrome covers were so ugly blue and black that I had to replaced them.  As a last resort, I'm thinking about sanding and painting my exhaust pipes with hi-temperature flat-black paint for a quick fix or tried powder coating.  Has anybody ever tried this and what are the negatives of doing this?  All suggestions and ideas are appreciated.  Thanks.

So what kind of pipes do you have?
If they are stock Honda, I'd be surprised. The stock pipes are double walled headers.
Turning them blue would be an extreme heat problem.

I have a 99 Interstate. I have seen many after market pipes on other Valks that have blued because the headers are a single wall pipe.  Others on the board can speak to a liner liquid/coating that some have used with varying degrees of success.

Good luck.
