Several years back I picked a great cleaning product for boot marks and road grime.  It was a piece of very very fine steel wool (or something just like very very fine steel wool) that was impregnated with a pink compound, kinda bubble gum smelling.  With a warm pipe, I would pull off a little piece and use small circular motions and the grime would disappear.  An oily residue would be left behind which was easily removed by a terry cloth towel.  It made the pipes gleam.  Unfortunately I have very little left of the product and there no longer is a label on the container.  Does anyone have a clue what I am referring to?

I believe you're talking about Nevr Dull, made by Eagle One.

G-Man, I had a small package of that stuff some years' back.  Pink cotton (not metal) wadding that would clean and polish any metal brilliantly.  Similar to but better than Never Dull.  It is long gone and I cannot remember the name either.   It did smell like bubble gum.

However, there is a product for cleaning gun bores that was (is?) called "Lead-Wipe", a heavy yellow cotton cloth impregnated with chemicals.  Designed to be cut into appropriate size patches for various calibers and used with a jag tip, it will push the lead in the rifling right out the barrel.  Over the years I discovered it would polish any metal to a brilliant shine, and clean stuff like burnt heel marks on pipes, or any other hard to clean job as well as anything I ever tried.  Try any gun shop, I think it's still made.

After seeing Jess' reply, I remember having another one too. Seems like it was a "Mother's" product. Both worked well on my wheels but never tried them on chrome.

Would it be "Heavy Metal" metal polish?  At the time it was offered in a Blue label and a Red label.  The wadding embedded with product was the same color as the label.  Blue was light duty - Red was heavy duty.  I got mine from Les Schwab Tires several years ago.  I look there occasionally to see if they have it.  I've seen a liquid version of the same name product, but not the wadding material type such as Never Dull.  Need a pic of the container?

You are ABSOLUTELY correct.  I didn't realize it was cotton, I just thought is was extremely fine steel wool as it was so tough to break a piece off of.  And, since you know exactly what I was referring to, I can easily take your advice on the alternative you've suggested.  Thank you very much!

The container was similar to a couple of hockey pucks stacked on top of each other for the shape.  White plastic with a plastic cap as wide as the container.  The pink wadding inside was in a thick mil plastic bag to keep it from drying out.

I just did a search and found this:

The label and lid are very different to what I had, but the description sounds pretty darn close.

Thanks to all.

EZ Off Oven Cleaner works really well at removing boot marks from exhaust pipes.
