Kuryakin Transmission covers. Good? Bad? Not Ugly....

Hi All,

I have a 99IS and have always liked the look of the Kuryakin transmission covers. However, I'm not a big fan of extra bits I don't need or do not provide some function. In short, I'm on the fence about purchasing a set.

I'm really interested to hear from folks who have them.
  1. What do they look like after a couple of seasons?
  2. Any problems after installation?
  3. Do they vibrate?
  4. Is the color of the chrome the same as stock (they appear the same)?
  4. Would you purchase or replace them again if they were damaged?

I bought a set for my tourer. They look good I don't believe they are chrome though I'm guessing a high polished stainless and no rattles so far. One thing I did notice is a bit of tranny noise reverbs thru them if in high gear and you lug the engine a bit. I read where some folks spraid the inside with undercoating so it would absorb the noise. Its not bad but there is a different sound and no not such a noise it irriatates maybe more of a drone from tranny be more on base.

Mine have been on at least 7 years. As well as their Intake Valences. They've held up very well.

They're not Stainless, but are chromed cast aluminum.

I consider them one of the three esential garnishments, Kury Trans Covers, Kury Spark Plug Valences and Swing Arm Covers. Have them all on both my 97 Std and 2000 IS and they hold up well.

honestly look great rattle , make to much noise had to spray undercoating on the  back side .. like the looks dont make it any faster though , would i replace them yea i like the looks

-no, but some say there is more noise and put some sound dampening material behind, have not tried that on mine .... YET

I loved the look of them, but wasn't sure if I was going to buy them before other things. Had a set gifted to me and installed them. Now, I feel it's one of the ebst upgrade on looks you can do and I've had no sound/rattle problems.

Well...let me rock the boat and say that I had 2 problems with mine.  First, when trying to install them, I busted one of the alternator bolts that holds the left side on.  Luckily only one busted, and apparently the other 2 bolts are adequate for securing the alternator.  One of these days, I'll get around to drilling it out and fixing it.  The other problem I had was on the right side.  The little spacer sleeve that goes over the center mounting bolt vibrated like crazy...drove me nuts.  So I took it back off, put some silicone on it, then reinstalled.  Problem solved.

With respect to my 'Chrome Color ' question....
I have noticed that not all Chrome is the same, some appears darker, or deeper in shine/color.
I'm glad to hear the are not chromed plastic.

Can anyone share what they used to deaden the reflected transmission noise? Is this a spray on solution?

i used a patch  that they use on tractor trailer to patch leaks in roofs . tar backing with a aliuminum front sticks very well .. or a can of rubberized undercoating tape front and side off spray back of them . good luck

I took mine off after eight years, valance covers also. They still looked fine, I just got aggravated with  having to remove and replace them while doing servicing. I may put them back on one day, but I am kind of liking that tractor-engine look right now. I used dynamat on the inside to eliminate noise and vibration.

I beg Your pardon sir, I happen to think she looks pretty damn good naked and without any make-up. Besides, when I'm riding her, looks and make-up is not what I'm after.

If you notice a color hue other than brilliant blinding chromium it's a poor quality plating process you see. Kuryakyn chrome withstands the test of time. Unlike some of the Cobra products did [color good, but it peeled].
