I have a 99 interstate to which I have recently done the desmog and a inline electric fuel shut off, so the next step is to do the petcock mod. After reading many posts, and researching the archives, there was many opinions on this. Finally after tearing into the petcock and seeing that there was 3 different sections (the main petcock body, the diafram section with the weep hole, and the outer plate with the vacuum port), I decided to eliminate the diafram section (no need?), and the vacuum port section (less vacuum hose, less leak problems). I made a block off plate out 1/8" aluminum bar stock by tracing around the vacuum port plate, and a rubber gasket by doing the same, and bolted it to the main body of the petcock with the factory screws.
My questions are these; Does anyone know of any problems with doing it this way? Do I still have reserve? I didn't see any posts about eliminating the diafram section, and thought there might be a reason why. I took the bike for a test ride, and everything seemed to work fine. When riding, I turned the petcock to off and the bike did start to run out of gas, so I know the off position still works. It now has a full tank of gas, so there is no way (yet) of knowing if the reserve still works.
Thanks to everyone for your responces,

Paul

Paul, if I understand what you are saying, you do not have a reserve anymore...

If all you did is seal the vaccum diaphram and port off from the rest of the petcock, then yes you still have off, on and reserve.

Sorry RJ we disagree.

Ya you still have reserve unless you messed with the filter and vertical tube or the valve handle thinggy itself which sounds like you did neither

We can disagree, I ain't going to do no Redneck Ass-whompin,  coolsmiley 2funny Evil LOL,  cause the way I interpreted his message was not like you guys did.     I read it as he took everything out.   If he did, then no reserve, if the tube is still in there, yes he does........

I did leave the tube in the top of the petcock that goes into the tank. I only took apart and removed the part that had the diafram in it, and the plate that had the vacuum port on it. If I understood you guys right, I still have reserve as long as the tube is still on the top of the petcock (which it is).
Thanks again,
Paul

YES, you do have a reserve with the way you did it.
