goin' back to the stock pipes that came with my used Cobra 6 into 6 exhaust equipped '98 Tourer. I took the stock pipes out of the box for the first time, and was surprised at how clean and scratch/dent free they are.

If I switch 'em back to stock, I was wondering if there's anything I need to watch out for... The previous owner said he never re-jetted. The Cobras are real blue/black about the first foot or so, plus the beautiful sound does get a little annoying on a long ride.

I hear ya on the long ride LOUD pipes, Watch out for a 7-10 HP increase if not re jetted, I like the Drag pipes looks and sound but, scavenging for a unblown motor will increase HP. I have Vikings and they also get to be a headache after 4-5 hr's, But my Wife Loves the sound LOL!!!

I've never removed the exhaust system on the bike, not even to remove the rear wheel, but others always mention the torque of the flange bolts. Be careful not to over torque as they will twist off.

Use liberal amounts of penetrating oil on the exhaust flange nuts and allow them to soak for a while.  Then spray them again before putting a wrench on them.  Use steady pressure don't snatch them or the studs will break.

Lots of penetrating oil (You might try the Acetone/Trans fluid mix referenced here before) and go easy getting them off.

When you tighten things back up, follow the recommended torque specs. Then recheck every hundred miles or so until they stay tight.

I just switched from Cobras to unmolested  IS pipes. The first thing I noticed was the transmission whine, the second was front tire noise. I had read about both but never heard them before. You will enjoy the quiet exhaust.

It does take awhile to get the new exhaust gaskets crushed to hold torque. A little anti-seize on the studs and torque to about 70 - 80 inch lbs. Ride, let cool, retorque and repeat. I think it took 5-6 times on mine.

[/quote]Don't want to hijack this thread, but I'm going to throw a big wrench into this one for Redline. Install some Mobil 1 15-50 into that crankcase and you won't hear anymore transmission whine. You won't hear any whining from me either.

Get some new exhaus washers and a few new studs in case some do break.  Look in the Cobra's after removal and up into the exhaust ports to make sure all of the old gaskets get removed.  They have a tendency to hide from ya.
