Beginning

Broke two of the bolts holding the alternator during change out (did not know that bolts would be so hard to get out and snapped them off even with the casing of the motor).
OK, lets just get the handy dandy angle drill out and drill/tap them out of the case and bolt on the alternator.
Hmmmm, angle drill does not fit into the hole to allow that to happen.  What next???
Check the manual (glad I bought one of those) Have to pull the motor....ok..am pretty handy with tools (thanks to my dad who was a transmission specialist...right tool for the right job).
Jacked up the bike (glad again I bought a Craftsman Motorcycle jack and built an adapter).  Took all of the things keeping me from getting at the motor off (who knew that an Interstate would have all this stuff to get to the motor).  Finally got all of the outside stuff done and started to unbolt the motor from the bike.  Got all of the bolts out...manual says to "lower the motor slightly and pull it forward to get the drive shaft to release from the U Joint". Hmmm..having a little trouble there.  Not coming out like all the rest of the bolts, shafts and asundry things.  Tried to poke it, pry it, even wished it would come out but to no avail.
Yesterday...was back at it again (there is a time frame for getting things done...mine is before Rolling Thunder) and pushed and tried to get it to come out but no avail...last push and all of a sudden Bon Temps (am a Cajun after all...means Good Times) leans toward me...OH OH...yep you got it...slid off the jack stand and ended up leaning on the side with the jack under her.  She is now suspended about 8" off the ground by the motor jack and a jack stand under the bag rail.
Will have to get some help to put her back on the jack stand...then try to complete the job.  Have not had a problem with the back but did take a lot of strain as she was coming off the stand.
Does ANYONE have any recommendations as to:
1) Why the motor did not come off the drive?
2) What can I do to make the motor come off the drive?
3) Good recommendations to keep the bike on the lift?

Thanks for any help...sorry for making this a little long but had to vent somewhere...(fiance asked "Why did you not bring it to the dealer?"  short answer...would rather have money in the pocket and fix it myself.

You can pull the drive line boot back and see the universal joint and pry at that point but I don't think that was the problem. The universal slides off easily.

It's general recommendation to tie the bike down to the lift. How you do that is your problem, I use clamps to the frame rails.  I have pictured the bike sliding off the lift and all the damage it would cause so that's enough for me to insure it stays put of the lift.

Had the same thing happen with the bolts. Once I had the bike in the air with the lift, I used 4 heavy duty ratchet straps to suspened the bike and used the lift to lower the motor. I didn't have a problem with shaft letting go, but you do have to pull the starter first. Replaced the rear case and mounted the engine back in, live is good.

I broke the middle bolt of the three a few years ago.  I used the dremel with the flexible shaft and a tungston bit to drill through, and then cut the bolt in half the long way.  Re-tapped the threads and replaced all three bolts using antisieze.  It took a couple of hours to get the broken bolt out.

What I learned after reading this thread is that if I snap off a bolt changing out the alternator....either take it to the stealer to fix or sell the Valk and buy another one!!!!   2funny  No way am I going to pull the MOTOR b/c I snapped off a couple of small bolts!!!
