I have noticed a few posts where people have broken bolts off trying ot remove stuff from these motors.  And I know of a couple incidents where it wasnt posted.  These motors go a long ways needing no real maintenance so sometimes like in the case of an alternator, or a water pump, starter etc.  Those bolts may have been in there a while.

Most threads on our bikes are carved in aluminum and the bolts are steel, dissimilar metals tend to be nasty after a time to deal with.

Generally speaking if you can run the motor and try these stubborn bolts with a warm engine you will have more success.  Also there is a tool most of keep far from our Valkyries but comes in handy.  I use this technique when removng the master cylinder cover screwes.  Find a smallish hammer and give a few solid taps on the screwdriver or socket before trying the fastener, this can only help loosen a stubborn bolt and has saved me many times.  If you still feel it is taking excessive force to break a bolt loose, judge by the size of the bolt.  Large bolts like engine hanger, frame bolts can survive a bit of torque.  small ones like on the water pump CANNOT.  so more heat, penetrating oil, tapping on them, and using good tools that fit properly will maximize your chances of success.

BUT! If you do break a bolt, dont panic theres almost always  a good answer until you do something in haste to further mess it up.  And if you had done all the precautionay steps (heat, oil, tapping) then it can only make your now extraction operation a bit easier.

Wise advice Chris.
I'll add one more bit, slow down. Most of my self made problems have been caused by trying to move too fast.

Also apply steady pressure don't snatch the wrench to break the bolt loose.  An old machinist once told me you can save a lot of grief if you try to tighten the bolt before you try to remove it.
