Hey guys another potentially stupid question. After all... I am the villige idiot. Especially after thinking my bike was flooding or and leaky valve guides( smoking) or bad petcock, or Plugs over a month, only to find out from some experienced good samariton who took mercy on me... if you force really hard the choke lever down to the seam, dont touch the throttle and hit the starter she will bust off every time.... It wouldnt be so bad if I had no experience, but I have been fooling with motors from go carts to bikes to cars and dune buggy motors since I was 12. Gees what a Dumb A. this bike really fooled me after I let it set up for 4 months.
Anyway on to the next one...I just changed oil and filter. this time went with Mobil 1 syn bike oil. I thought the capasity was 3.7...apparently not. it does not touch the stick.
Exactly how much does it take to fill from zero?

The oil capacity is 3.9 quarts. Put a little more in there. The manual says to run the motor for 3-5 minutes and then turn it off and let it sit for 2 minutes. Then, unscrew the dipstick and wipe it clean. Stand the bike up straight and place the dipstick back in the hole but don't screw it in. Pull it out and check the level.

Are you measuring it with the bike vertical (not on the side stand)? The bike must be vertical.

also which filter? You can fit a little longer one on there and get in the full 4 qts.

Bike standing upright to check. 4 quarts will always do it. If you have the "tell-true" temperature dipstick...look carefully. Clean oil is really hard to see on it.

Thanks guys , but I actually have it on a 2x4 block of wood which almost has it straight up. I have a standard oem oil filter. I checked it first thing this morning without it being cranked first. It is an OEM stock stick with the two lines on it. I looked seriously close to be sure I was not overlooking the clean oil. I poured all 4 quarts in and it does not touch the stick at all. ??? suggestions?
I just went back and bought another quart and will add just a tad at a time till I see it on the stick (not screwed in and bike upright)
Feel free to add comments for my D A as neccesary..

Clean oil is very, very hard to see on the stick. Wipe the stick with your clean finger

Or a dry, clean, white paper towel. Just did my first oil change a couple of weeks ago and had to almost stick the dipstick in my eye to see the new, clean oil.
I would not add any more oil to it. Chances are it's so clean you can't see it. But, if it really isn't there - adding another quart isn't going to help anything.

Ok here is the facts ! 98 Tourer (Fast Black & Chrome) with a one week old oil change. CT on the back so the bike height is not stock.
Used the entire 4 quarts
Checked the oil holding the bike level, oil is warm from a ride 2 hours ago. Oil is covering the middle line on the stick.
Without laying the bike on the side-stand I slid a piece of 2x4 under the stand. Had to lean the bike over the board is thin.
Checked the oil again the line of the dip stick pointing Left- Right. The oil could be seen on the bottom of the stick, not half-way up. Twist the dip-stick in your fingers and on the back side there is 1/8 inch showing. Tire height ?

This is way too much drama for me.....I almost never check my oil....just change it...put the 4 quarts in and ride off.

Change the oil, add 4 quarts in, and then upright the bike and mark the dipstick accordingly so you "know" it has 4 quarts at your mark.

Almost upright won't do the trick. Sit on it and stand 'er up straight. Check it that way, and I'm sure you'll see it's just fine.

Son, don't make me come to Florida again..........
Ya got 4 quarts in it? Right? Ya got the drain plug in right?
Go ride it and after about 800 miles you should be able to see the oil on the stick IF you are setting on the seat and the bike it in a total upright position.......
PS: Check it cold..........

RJ beat me to it, but as many times as we told you how stiff the choke lever was, I just had to say, "Make sure you put the drain plug back in."

Poman, I think you need to have your eyes checked. You are far sighted.  I put 4 qts. in my Tourer and go. Sometimes I need to get in the right light to see the oil mark but----- I know it`s there. Ride On.

OUCH!!! LOL OK Jet Driver I deserved that comment about the choke. I have to admit I never had any mechanical device do me like that. I was to stubborn to think it was that simple.
End of the saga. I put about 3 more ounces from the 5th quart in it and stood it up while sitting on it and it is almost to the top line now. I'm good to go!!!
I'll try not to be so hard headed next time. should have stayed with the "KISS" theory.

Hey, don't feel like the Lone Ranger here. These bikes have a lot of "idiosyncrasies" as I found out being a new Valk owner myself. The second day I brought my '99 standard home I got to checking some lights that weren't working - off and on with the key probably twenty times before finding and fixing them. Of course I had to "test drive" it around the block, right? Darn thing cranked over like you wouldn't believe but wouldn't start!! Dang, what did I not hook back up or accidently unhook not knowing?? Did a quick re-check and everything looked good so, being baffeled, I posed the question here explaining what I did. On response was "you probably ran the battery down" and I thought "yeah, right!" This thing cranks over real fast, this guy doesn't know!! But being the cheapest thing to try let me put it on the charger, just for grins. Lo and behold came back a couple of hours later, hit the starter and she fires right up!!! Turns out these things need something like 9.7 volts to ingite the coils and it won't start with less. I learned the hard way myself not to be so hardheaded. There is a lot of great people with tremendous knowlege on this board and sometimes we just have to listen and heed what they are saying.
