When I had my frame powder coated many years ago the vin tag was removed. I never gave it much thought. But now Florida wants to verify the vin before they will give me a registration. Surely the number is stamped somewhere on the frame? Even the motor block has changed since then. Am I screwed?

See if you can get hold of a paint stick and rub across the stamping.  Wipe off the excess and you'll be able to read the vin easily.

Use a thin paper over and use a soft pencil. I have some old worn coins that are completely impossible to identify that I have identified the way.

Maybe it works?

get a digital camera, set it to macro, then take a picture of it.  then you can read it on the lcd (where you can zoom in), or on your pc.
I do this all of the time when trying to get serial numbers off of my tv or installed components.

The problem isn't with ME being able to read it. I have to have a LEO or someone from DMV read it. Most of it is visible, If I shine my dillo spotting light in there you can just make it out. The powder coat is pretty thick.

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

Can you get a pick and scratch out the numbers?

Can you get a pick and scratch out the numbers?

And ruin my paint job?? Wink

I think I can convince the LEO when he shows up. If he won't go with that I can rub a piece of 1000 grit over it to bring the numbers out.

Well, I got lucky. The LEO that showed up is a rider too. He has a Hyabusa he was telling me all about it. 106 in first gear... I wanted to tell him that was illegal... Wink

But he took a quick glance at the illegible stamped in numbers and pretended to read them, then signed off on the paper.   Grin
