I have been using Norton Ghost 2003 for years. Great stuff...

Used it when I replaced my hard drive on the desktop.  Copied the entire drive and it came up bootable on the new drive.  I tried Total Media Backup and it was shall we say "unsatisfactory".  The Acronis is the way to go.

Acronis True Image Home is one of the only low cost backup software that I have used that actually has been able to boot from a CD and restore my complete system to a new drive without one problem.  I regularly backup to a Seagate external 500Gb drive (USB) and it the bootable CD was able to access that drive and restore to my new SATA hard drive that replaced one that failed.

I use Norton Ghost also. I dont create a backup though. I go into the advanced mode of Ghost and clone a exact copy of my computer to a partition on a external drive. I do this on a regular basis. If I do have a catastrophic failure, It only takes a few minutes to clone a new hard drive back to my configuration. I have been using the western digital passport external drives for my backups. They are small and quick.

$105 and you get 500 gigs of backup. Great for taking with you on trips to save your pictures.
