A small bunch of us are heading out from Holt MO. north of Kansas City heading for the Tail. First time there for all of us. Any other places or things we should check out while in the area? We'll be gone for 7 days. Intending on taking our time and enjoy the ride.

You're REALLY planning ahead unless you meant May 17th. Cherohalla Skyway is what I consider a must do in the area and there are a bunch of other roads well worth checking out. Depends on what you want to see while here. Smokin Joe would be the best brain to pick as he's "been everywhere man".

Must do's kinda depends on what you're looking for, scenery or peg scraping. But my must do has some of both.
Dragon and the Cherohalla are done easily in a day even with a side trip to Bald river falls. From there I say the Blue Ride Parkway is a must do. All 469 miles of it is great, but my fav part is form Maggie Valley to Rocky Knob, Va. If you have to cut it short, at least to Boone NC. Just about any of the roads that cross the BRP are also great. Hwy 276 from the BRP towards Brevard, NC is awesome. Recommend a side trip from the BRP to Mt. Mitchell (highest poit east of the Mississippi) also. If you go all the way to Rocky Knob you can swing back down Hwy 58 back into Tn to Shady Valley and then do hwy 421 to Mountain City, TN, which is called the Snake.
Those are just a few of MY favorites. Then there are plenty of good routes heading North west out of Knoxville over the Cumberland Plateau back into KY.
Let us know if we can help with your trip.

Cumberland Gap, TN - ride up to the overlook. Very tight hairpins. Be warned.

Ditto on 421!! If you're close to Boone, NC, take 421 thru Mountain City, TN to Shady Valley.Stop at the Country Store (you'll see it) and decide which way to go from there. Backbone Rock is a great photo-op!!

Backbone Rock is a great photo-op!! You said "Backbone Rock"!!! I can't believe that another person on this board knows where Damascus, VA is. I grew up in Abingdon. One time going through Damascus I blinked and missed the whole town. It's nice to know that somebody else in the civilized world has treaded where you have. Enjoy the Blue Ridge Mountains for me. I miss them so much.

Another suggestion, as someone who has ridden all across Tn and most of KY, I would plan on getting to the eastern side of Tn as quick as you can. IMO there is not very good riding or scenery on the western half when compared to the mountains of the eastern end. Also stay as long as you can in this area before heading home. You'll see what I mean, when ya get here.

I was just down there a few weeks ago and the road was closed due to rock slides. They said they didn't know when it would be open. Anybody have any more recent news?

If you're talking about Deals Gap, you can ride almost the whole road if you come in from the NC side. Just cause it's "closed" don't mean the LEO's won't be there!!!
