It happened exactly the same last year, she stumbled and
grumbled until she died. Acted exactly as though I had
turned off the fuel. This year I had a new battery, lots 'o spark,
so it had to be no gas.

Got it home on a flat bed. She fired up again off the truck,
but ran very poorly. If the tank holds $15 'o gas, then there was
$3 'o gas left in there. I either had bad gas, or the idea of
condensation in the tank, water fouling the mix.
Drained the carbs, put in $10 'o new gas, fired right up, ran great.

I didn't obey the rule of fuel-it-up before she stops for the night.

Anybody else been stranded like that?

Sorry that happened. Haven't had it happen to me yet, but I have Joe's voice resounding in my head at the end of every ride and almost ALWAYS fill her up.

I had a similar thing happen. Ran out of fuel way too early, but switched to Res and was
able to continue on. Happened to me several times in 2 wks. most here suggested
to ditch the stock petcock and replace with a Pingle. Did that and haven't had the problem again.

When I rode with the SCRC I'd always put in 1 or 2 gallons every time
we'd stop for a break. People started asking me just how bad my mpg
was and I said "We're using their parking lot and facilities, why not
spend a $ or two. And NEVER pass up a chance to get gas."
Whenever I gas up, I always switch to reserve for a few miles. Runs
out all the gunk that builds up in the bottom of the tank.

Could be a symptom of an early petcock failure too.

Could be a failing petcock diaphram or a kinked vent line causing vacuum inside the tank.  If it does it again, pop the tank open and gove her anothr try before calling a tow.

As for petcocks, many love the Pingle and I have nothing bad to say about it, but I have 110k mi on my 2k I/S and have rebuilt the petcock once as a preventive maintenance, after mu buddy's failed on a long trip.  Parts only cost $25 and it's an easy job.  The rubber diaphrams won't last forever, and our bikes (and the rubber diaphrams inside the petcock) are 10 yrs old, give or take.  You can wait for it to go bad and pay a tow job or mechanic to rebuild after hydrolock, spend $25 now and rebuild it in the comfort of your shop, or spend $??? for a Pingle.  Everybody has choices...  My choice is to rebuild every 3-5 years just to keep things in good working order.  I also chose to add a fuel filter a few years back, and now have the Dan-Marc electronic shut-off valve on the bench waiting for a rainy weekend...

Ok, I thought of the vent line kinked when I was out there
stranded, I did pop the filler cover, still didn't start.

Now about that petcock, the next morning after the strand,
wouldn't the problem have remained, even after new gas?
If the petcock was the problem, it should have continued
to give me trouble.   Can the petcock be intermittent problem?

I definitely need an answer to that one please.

Well, I can only say that the week before my buddy and I left for Key West, his valk was sputtering while on a ride.  He took it to the local Honda shop and they replaced spark plugs.  2funny  It ran fine the first day out, made it to North Florida mostly interstate riding at speed, and we gassed-up and stopped for the night.  Next morning it started and by the time all the HDs warmed up enough to ride, he was running out of gas, with a full tank.  Embarrassed I pulled the vac line off #6 intake and was able to suck air through it (there should be no leaks).  We pulled the tank (still full), flipped it over and tore into the petcock.  Found a small hole in the vac (dry side) diaphram.  Smeared some RTV Gasket sealer on it and hit it with the blow dryer in the hotel room.  Within an hour, we were back on the road and finished over 2000 more miles before going home without incident.  So...  Can the petcock be intermittant?  I think yes, but I don't have scientific data to explain why.  To test it, try to pull a vacuum on the vac line at the #6 intake.  If it doesn't hold vacuum, either the line is leaking or the petcock diaphram.  There is a right-up in ShopTalk by Chuck B that shows step-by-step how to service and test the petcock.  You might try the test part first, to see if that's your problem.

I had this happen to me  two weeks ago. Almost all the same charateristics. Sounded like it was running out of gas. Switched to reserve with no better response. Pulled over called Wife and trailered it home. Would start and run in neutral but could tell it had a miss. Tore the petcock apart and could see light through the diaphram. Got a re-build kit and problem solved.
