Only got about 3,000 miles more out of the rear avon after replacing the final drive setup and everything that went along with that process. Pulled th rear section of the rear fender as well since I decided to try a Goodyear Triple Tread to decide for MYSELF about this dark/light controversy. Not asking for any input on that decision. Doing the nutcage mod while in there and was wondering how I know if I need to add washers as it seems I read some had to do that? If I need to do that, does anyone have pics of what/how to do what's needed? Thanks in advance for any mechanical input.

Looks like I have some cleaning to do in the nooks and crannys before she goes back together. I hate seeing what riding in the rain does to my girl.

On a good note I was anxious to see how the Honda Moly paste was doing on the hub and final since I had that installed BEFORE seeing I would be better off with something like Guard Dog or Belray waterproof grease which is what I'll be going back with. The Honda paste was splattered about but everything seemed pretty well coated and no wear on parts so I was happy to see it holding up til I got her pulled apart again. Thanks, Dave

I did not use any washers on mine. I think on some bikes the washers are used to tweak the fender over if needed. I believe they would be added between the fender and rail. I would button everything up and see how it looks. My GTT is almost touching the swingarm (I could probably slip in 2 or 3 credit cards) but have had no trouble in 18K miles.

If my memory serves, I had to add one or two washers on the right side to make my back tire clear the fender nut where I removed the nut cage.  These go on bolt number 11 between the fender rail and the frame.  It was a little tricky positioning them until the bolt went through, but I got it done.

3K on a rear Avon is horrible. I get between 13K and 17K on the rear. What pressures are you running and how do you ride? 46 PSI is my number for the old Venom. The new Cobra waits to go on till my Works Shocks come back from their rebuild trip to Calif.

I've never removed the rear fender ...I pull the shocks and drop or raise the axle above or below the exhaust ( works either way so you don't have to mess with the pipes ) .

A+ not removing the exhaust pipes.

If you need the fender washer mod here is a link.

Most don't need it, but I believe it more likely necessary with a trailer hitch.

Sandy,

Reread the original post:  "Only got about 3,000 miles more out of the rear avon after replacing the final drive . . . ."

Not sure how many miles he had on the tire when he replaced the final drive.

Didn't remove pipes either.  Wink Removed rear fender to do nutcage mod while it was apart so I wouldn't need to rip her down again for rubbing. Definately looks like I need the washers as it's off center looking after just setting the wheel back up against the drive. Sure hoipe a few washers is all that's needed. Also hoping the hitch doesn't mess with doing the Goodyear. Here's some pics. I'll check back on opinions when I can. I'm in the process of changing ISP's and have to steal a signal ffrom wifi spots when I get time til Monday. Thanks, Dave

Three nice pictures of your tire for sure!

Can't use that for determining what's going on but,,, looking at the pattern inside the fender it would seem to me you are running dead center inside the fender.

So if anything is off, it may be related to other things and not connected to the swingarm and frame alignment.

Yeah, realized after posting the pics don't really help much. I just had the wheel set onto the final and upon reevaluating it I think after everything is actually secured in it's place it should be fine with just the nutcage mod being done. Getting anxious to try her out as trhe weather has been beautiful. Thanks all. Dave

Nooks and Crannys cleaned and she's buttoned up. Got a 150-200 mile ride in on Sunday. Sure feels good to be in the wind again. No washers and NO rubbing. Thanks all.
