I live in SC and was considering changing insurance companies.  I got what I think is a good rate with Allstate.  Saw the new add on TV and called.  Rates seem reasonable.  Anyone use allstate?  Have any problems with this company?

...While rates are indeed a very important aspect of any Insurance you obtain, personally I think whats equally, if not just a tad more importatnt.....is service. Especially when it comes to motorcycles.

Case in point.

On our latest adventure on the road, we had a flat tire on the interstate ...towing a trailer...in the middle of rural Arkansas,
at 5:30 in the afternoon. All the Honda shops we called were closed
for the day. Luckily I had opted for the "Road side Service" that
my carrier..Progressive offered. By 10 am the next morning there
was a flatbed at our hotel, towing my entire rig onto the back.
He towed us over 60 miles to the local Honda shop in Memphis
Tennessee.....and Progressive paid the entire amount for the tow.
Matter of fact, the tow truck driver told us on the way to the
Honda Shop...first thing he does...is find out if the "entire tow amount"
is covered by the Carrier...then he added...you guys are covered 100 %.  cooldude

By 2:30 pm that afternoon, we were riding out of the Honda Shop
parkinglot...with a brand new rear tire....and continuing on our journey.

Is Progressive the cheapest Insurance out there ?...Probably not..
But it was defiinitely worth a few Xtra bucks to me...to get service like that..  cooldude

State Farm tried to charge me as much as they do for car insurance.  Progressive has my m/c insurance.  My independent agent changed me to Dairyland for a year.  Once I saw how they treated me after my Triumph vs truck accident, I went back to Progressive.  They simply treat me better when it counts.

I use progressive, had it 12 years and never used any of it. Liability, collision and comp-$500 deductible, $1000 coverage for after market stuff. Limited medical coverage because my employer insurance covers me on the bike. Around $100 per year, again I have never tried to collect, just there in case......

I doubt your agent will have much to do with the way his company responds to a situation and he won't be there when you have an incident (like on tv).

Insurance costs are quite regional. It's hard to say who's the best specifically in your area.I personally don't want to pay for an agent and his local office and overhead before I get a dollar of coverage. The individuals that I know that have kept the "same agent and insurance that I've had for XXXyears" is undoubtedly the person that hasn't inquired about insurance rates in the same amount of years and consequently, is paying far too much for far too long.
Insurance companies are like prostitutes-shop around a littled before you jump in bed.

In my region, AARP(Hartford) for my cars-Dairyland for my bikes untill I find something cheaper.

My sister is a paralegal for a firm that asists claimants collect from there insurance companies when a loss has occured. She says that Allstate is handsdown the absolute worst. She also says that Progressive and Safeco are among the very best. Hope this helps.

Progressive.

Used the tow service once about five years ago.  Stranded in the middle of nowhere... on a Sunday afternoon.  Took awhile for the call center to find a tow interested in taking the call.  Roll-off rig traveled 40 miles to pick me up.  Talked the call center in to dropping me at a buddy's place on the way - 62 miles - to the much farther away -113 miles- closed Honda shop.  Tow traveled a total of 220 miles by the time he got back to base camp.  Bike was towed 62.  Had I gone to where the bike shop was, they would just drop me and the bike off at the curb... someplace.  MC shops are closed on Mondays.  Would have been Tuesday before I could get the bike to the shop. They wouldn't have had the part on hand.  I'd still be over a hundred miles from home.

The "thing" that saved the day was me carrying four soft-tie straps.  The tow truck had no way of securing the bike.  The driver didn't have a clue either. The only gear he had on board was for snagging regular vehicles.  Had I not been equipped with soft ties, no tell'n how that story would have ended.  The ride to my buddy's place included about 10 or 15 miles of harrowing twisty two-lane.  A long rocky ride to the bottom of the river gorge for the unfortunate soul who goes off the road. The driver was a young goofy idiot who was trying to impress us with his mountain driving skills.  I told him to slow this son-of-a-beach down... if we ended up down in the bottom of the canyon I was going to kick his ass all the way down till we hit bottom.  Needless to say, I wasn't impressed. His hooligan style driving agility was a testament to how I tied my bike down to his greasy slippery steel tilt bed truck.

All that for something like $20 bucks per year on the Insurance policy.

Gave my buddy a gratuity for bringing me and the wife unit home (another 62 miles).  I went back a week later with my trailer to pick up my bike and bring it back home.

I've had Allstate for over 37 years.  I don't know about premium cost (I'm the same, why change when something isn't broke) , but for me the service has been excellent.

Had to accidents on my 2001 Valk while in California.  Allstate guarentees the repairs for the life of the policy.  After one accident I requested a full check up from front to back because I wanted to make sure no frame damage. When a lady backed out in front of me and I hit her with my right side engine.  Almost missed her if I had another 5 feet.

Claims adjuster said that wasn't neccessary.  Had them document it and about two years later I started having drive train problems.  Had a rear bearing go out and the dealer found that there was damage to my drive shaft.  Contacted Allstate and after a couple calls up the chain I was told a new drive shaft would be at the dealer the next day along with a new rear gear, pinion and all the parts needed to fix the rear end.

When I went to pick up the Valk the dealer told me that the parts were personally deliever by the claims agent who had done my Valk.  Said she was pissed cause it took her all day to drive down to the main warehouse in LA and then out to Lancaster to deliver the parts.  No cost to me with a phone call the next week verifying that I had satisfaction.

So to  me backing the policy is just as important as cost.

Good question Fudgie, but let's hope people answer with rates for comparable coverage.  I checked Progressive today just to see,,, getting pretty much the MAX available would be $517/yr.  for my area.

I have had State Farm home & auto insurance for over 30 years. I have shopped them time & time again {on auto} & State Farm has always been the cheapest.
When we bought the bikes I brought them the quote sheet I got from Progressive & asked my SF agent if they could match or do better. She called me back the next day & said no way, buy the Progressive. So I did.
While finalizing the bike insurance the Progressive agent asked about my cars. I read him the SF numbers & they got close but not quite there, plus they don't offer house insurance.
Yet to have a claim {& I hope I never do!} on the bikes so I guess you could say Progressive is treating me well by taking the least amount of money from me.

as every insurance company is different in different parts of the country, you are going to have to  call around for the best rate. but when doing so remember to compare the rates with the coverage in mind. not all companies will offer the same coverage unless you ask. we have state farm and will keep them. also make sure if something happens that they(the insurance company) has your back. I.E. not all insurance companies believe in going to court for their client. nationwide is one of them along with allstate. also dont believe the crap about emergency responce vehicles, they dont exist. how do i know this, my wife worked for state farm for around five years and knows about all the companies out there (and her mother worked for nationwide and a friends son works for progressive). in short, find a rate with the coverage you like and go with it. safe riding.

I have USAA for house and two cars, they pointed me to Foremost for NJ bike ins. USAA quoted close to $1000 per year, whe it was only $350 when I lived in PA.

Never used them other than send a check...and I would like to keep it that way.  cooldude

I too use USAA for most everything else, but was given a laughable quote from them on motorcycle insurance... Got a letter from them recently they're working with Progressive now, and you can get USAA Motorcycle Insurance "Backed by USAA" but the insurance is actually Progressive...

When I initially talked to them years ago the representative told me that basically USAA didn't want anything to do with motorcycle insurance, but so many people refuse to deal with anyone BUT USAA, that they offered it, but at rates that would...encourage... people to go elsewhere for motorcycle insurance... (This was before they offered the USAA Through Progressive deal.)

https://www.usaa.com
USAA???????????/   YIKES!!!!!!!!!!   My blood just hit boiling point!   tickedoff tickedoff tickedoff

IMHO - USAA insurance isn't worth the paper it's written on!   I speak (or type) from personal experience.

We were members of USAA for over 15 years.   We not only had our vehicle insurance from them, buy also had a credit card, and a couple loans, including the loan and insurance for our 2004 33' fifth wheel RV.   We lost that RV in a tornado on May 10th, 2008.

USAA adjusters spent a lot of time trying to come up with reasons to rip us off for replacement value.   They pulled numbers out of their arse to assign a fictitional value for that RV.  To me, replacement value means the price it would take to buy the EXACT SAME RV again.   I found two separate RV's IDENTICAL to the one we lost and both faxed and mailed copies of the units to prove what I needed to replace my RV.

We aren't talking about a couple hundred dollars difference here.  I mean USAA short changed me by over $5,500.00 from what it would have cost me to get the same RV back again, and that is without the cost of travel to bring it back home.  The "comparison" RV's they used to determine value weren't even the same manufacturer, nor the same lenth.

I could go on and on, but suffice it to say, USAA lost a lot of business from SW MO on that incident.  I transferred 100% of our insurance, credit card and loan business to other, more reputable companies.  They lost more in future interest earnings from me than that claims adjuster saved by screwing once loyal customers.  I had the fealing all along the adjuster was more interested in his personal percentages on paper than satisfying customers.

Screw me once, shame on YOU.  Screw me twice......... well, IT AIN'T HAPPENING.

I wouldn't recommend USAA to my worst enemy.

Just saying.... tickedoff

We now use Foremost on most of our motorcycles.
