I replaced mine, but now I've seen several drive shafts... I can't tell much or any
difference between the new and old... I think they're cheap, and there's some peace of
mind in having them on-hand if they turn out to be bad when you have everything apart... and there's a
seal on the other end of the drive shaft you'd wish you had if it looked like goo was leaking into the
swingarm from the pinion...

After Dave's little episode at Hot Glues, I ordered me one up...  Will be here on Monday, tomorrow.  I think I will order the shaft also, just to be sure that I have everything I need when I take it apart.  I would hate to need a shaft and have to wait 4 days on it to get to the stealer!

If you get a new shaft I would go ahead and get the pinion cup also. Best to run new with new. Cup is cheap and easy to replace. I know I had mine strip out one morning going to work. JMHO

If you have already been in there and used BellRay waterproof grease or the like I doubt that you will need the shaft or the pinion or the spring (very hard to break that spring) . From my experience the pinion joint was what wore out even with that the seal was OK The dealer did my first two rear tire changes I had rusty drive splines and a badly worn pinion joint to show how much they cared .

I might get a spare boot.
Don't let the swing arm hang free or the boot can get pinched.
Alcohol on the boot lip will help to get it into place and then diappear.
Once you've done it it's not bad, the first time can be tough though.

Does anyone here consider it a good idea to have a zerk fitting on the U-Joint to keep it greased as part on preventive maintenance? I don't believe I've ever read a post concerning this.
I have though that when I R&R my U-joint, I would install the zerk fitting.
Any thoughts????

It appears it would be hard to get a grease gun on that zerk fitting.......

Ya know, that could be a valid point...
But, I remove the wheel and drive shaft every 10k for spline maint. Ahhh, I'll check the clearance on the next go around.
Cheers
