Ya gotta hold your mouth just right and it will slide right in. Also, if ya blink just right it will fall in also. I was fighting my 1st one I replaced and was getting madder by the minute. Was ready to start spewing nasties, when my youngest then grand daughter walked in the garage. She tripped on my light cord, I looked at her and the SOB dropped right in. To this day, I still don't know what I was doing wrong...

The biggest key is getting the alternator square with the hole, the second thing is making sure that all four rubber bumpers are in their correct position. I have found it easiest when they sit at 12:00 3:00 6:00 and 9:00. then the only one that really moves around much it the top one (12:00) Get in there with a small screw driver or pick and lift it up until the fins are started then it should be a piece of cake.

Check your dampers. There are four of them, but each one is two pads, connected by a small rubber "strap". Reach in and pull one out, and you'll see what I mean. Those straps are only there to keep the dampers in place during alternator installation. If that strap is broken, then the campers will not behave. There's no way to reach in and move the dampers around while installing the alternator. If you have one with the strap broken, put it at the bottom (6 o'clock) position. Gravity will hold it in place. If you have two, you might have to replace one or both in order to get it in. The only other way (if that's the issue) is to pay attention to which way gravity wants to pull it, and work the alternator vanes around to manipulate the dampers in the blind.

Interesting, a few weeks ago I pulled the alternator from my new standard and installed it in my IS as a spare until the new alternator came in. Yesterday I pulled that one back out of my IS and reinstalled it into the standard and installed the new alternator in the IS. By my count that would be three installs. I used a small pick each time to adjust the bumper (Dampers) slightly until I had all four fins Just barely started, then slid the alternator home and tightened it up. I'm not real happy about this bit of experience, but I can now pull an alternator and install a new one in about 25 minutes.

I stand corrected. As for the "not happy about the experience", I second, third, etc. that one. I did TOO MANY alternator swaps a year or so ago. I got pretty good at it, but I'd rather not have any experience on it at all.

A small dab of grease will help hold the dampers in place. I always leave the noise suppressor off until alt. is in and then bolt it on.
