Pingle reserve
«

I've had a Pingle fuel valve for about 5 years and have never had to switch to reserve. Today, me and a bud rode 160 miles and still did not switch to reserve. I filled up and it took 4.53 gallons. My question is, when using a Pingle, how much fuel is left in the tank when it become necessary to switch to reserve? Not much is my guess... ???

About 13 miles. I carry a half gallon in MSR fuel bottles when on a long trip.

Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

I would say around 20 miles. This year I ran out after 8 miles and that was a loaded trailer, 2 up.

Somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 miles, if you are being very gentle with it.
Years ago, when I got my Pingle, I found that unacceptable. I wrote this how-to back then:
Take a look at your Pingel valve. It has a screen to fit in the fuel tank. Inside the screen (hold it to the light if you need) is a pick-up tube. There’s also a hole in the bottom of the valve. The hole serves reserve fuel, while the pickup tube serves the “On” position. You can see your reserve amount, expressed in inches. It’s the difference in height between the bottom of the tank (the hole) and the height of the pick-up tube. That tube needs to be taller. Now look at your OEM petcock. See how the pick-up tube is longer on it? If the Pingel’s tube were the same height, the reserve quantity would be the same.
The height of the OEM petcock’s pick-up tube is 3.350”
Now, what you need to do is extend the Pingel pick-up tube. Here’s one way- there are quite a few ways to get this done.
Get an inline fuel filter and put it under the tank. Pingel sells one. There are lots of them out there. I kinda like clear ones, you can see when they are getting fouled, but they are more susceptible to leaking and/or damage. You need the inline filter because you will have to penetrate or destroy the screen on the inlet tube of the Pingel valve.
Now, pull the screen off the Pingel inlet. Go down to the local hobby shop. They have small brass tubing there. Get some the same size as your pick-up tube. You could also buy it to just slip over the pick-up tube. Now cut a piece to fit, and attach it. Some low-temp solder would do it. Some 2 part epoxy would do it. I haven’t tried it, but some shrink-wrap for electrical wires might do it. I’d be afraid the shrink-wrap might melt in the fuel, so I don’t recommend that one.
Put it back together! You’re done! Can you believe it was that simple!

I recall that write-up and may try it next time I pull the tank, which will be soon. Thanks for the feedback!
