I'm thinking of purchasing a modular helmet. I usually ride with a 1/2 helmet but the sun is really roasting my cheeks lately and I need to start covering them up. The flip up design sounds a little more convienient than full face. Anyone have recomendations?
I like the looks of the Nolan 102 and HJC CL Max. If you could also recomend an on line retailer that would be great.
Thanks...  Undecided

I've owned the CL Max and the Nolan N100E, the 102's predessor.  The Nolan is my favorite.  Better side vision, better airflow and a lot quieter.  With the CL Max, I could hear the wind popping and cracking over the vents.  Don't hear anything like that with the Nolan.  Talked a friend into buying a Nolan 102 to replace his worn out HJC Symax.  He loves it.  I'm currently looking to replace mine.  With the release of the Nolan N103, I'm waiting to find a deal on a 102.  Unless you need on right now, be patient.

Cheesy I myself have and like the Nolan Reason #1 it fits. Whatever you decide on make sure you try it out. Sizes very by manufacturer so does the fit.

I prefer to ride wearing my half helmet.

But, I have a Nolan modular that I wear if it's cold out or if it's raining.

The Nolan is a good helmet.

If I needed a new modular helmet I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Nolan.

Anita has a Nolan and loves it.  I wear a Fulmer Modus and it fits very well.  I know Fulmer makes a good helmet due to needing one in the past.  Fulmers are less expensive as well which is why I bought the first one.

I haven't tried a Nolan, though I only hear good things about them. I bought the CL Max  ($125) as it was about the only one I could find in a size large enough to fit my fat head.  As for wind noise, that's what iPod's are for!

It's not one you mentioned, but I recently bought a Shark modular.  The great thing about it is that it is designed to convert to a 3/4 helmet -- the "flip" doesn't just go up, but locks into the back of the helmet.  It has a regular faceshield plus a separate tinted eyeshield (kinda like the Scorpion half helmets, only different in design).

It is much lighter in weight than my Nolan, as well.  DOT rated, of course.

Love my Nolan. I once stuck my head through the back of a parked truck with my first Nolan helmet. It did everything it was supposed to. Can't test one any better than that.
My new Nolan is very quiet.
My wife's Zues creaks more than my Nolan in the wind. My Nolan is whisper quiet compared to the rush of air and creaking that my wife puts up with.
I can ride comfortably with the Nolan in the open position on occasion. My wife's head feels like a sail if she tries that.
The Nolan feels lighter than the Zues or comporable HJC. Zues is fairly light weight and still works well.
Just my 2cents. You've got to find what fits your head the best. Ride safe.

I wore Modular and though I liked it, boy Big IV, you are right, they"creak" in the wind. I also find they limit my peripherl vision. Then I tried Nolan half helmet with zip out neck and ear pieces. That's the helmet for me! Great in Florida and the ear pieces keep my exhaust almost tollerable. Helmets are kinda like guns and politics...get what's right for you! Wink

I have the HJC Symax 2 and really like it.  It is very comfortable and fits my head right.  Nolan's do not fit my head.  Also, I like the interior sun visor (in addition to the regular visor) and do not find it very noisy...although I do ride behind a windshield.  The other thing is that while my Shoei that it replaced, my Fulmer half-helmet, and my HJC off-road helmet are all size large, I did have to buy a X-Large in the Symax for some reason.  They are just sized smaller, I guess.  And even though I bought an XL, it was still quite snug when I first got it.  But now it is broken in and is VERY comfortable.

My only complaint is that it does fog up pretty bad when it is cold.  So I have to crack it open...which isn't the best when it is really cold.  Either that or I just don't breathe. crazy2

I got it from newenough.com for about $200 or so delivered.

I have a Nolan 100 and a Nolan 102.  Both are great!  However, try to check the fit on any helmet that you buy. For instance, although the Nolans are alike and in size, the 102 has less chin room for me than the 100.

I bought the Fulmer M1 Modus Trident in a Flamethrower Night Glow pattern that I just LOVE!

This is a good well constructed helmet that doesn't trap noise, doesn't creak in the wind and gets good reviews from the "experts" for helmets. I went a tried on a lot of helmets when I was looking for one to buy.

The part that I liked about this Flamethrower, is that the orange part is reflective and shows up really well at night... when I prefer to ride, plus the Tangelo color matched my new paint on my bike.  coolsmiley

To boot, this helmet is about 1/4 the cost of some of the high end models, although I would bet that the protection is just as good as the others. I hope that I never need to know for sure.

If you really like your half helmet, and don't want to spend the $$, have you thought about wearing a bandanna/hankerchief around your face?  We have done this numberous time out west, with and without a 3/4 helmet on. Still get all the air without the sun burning ya. We even do it in the rain. Evil

The way they open it allows for the helmet to wrap your head better. Since you don't have to pull it off over year head you don't need any extra chin or ear room for sliding. Most people tend to run a size smaller in a modular than in that same brands traditional full face helmets.

I always advise someone to try a helmet on. Although I do like online and catalog deals.

Been happy with my Nolans.  Wish I had spent the money to get the wife a Nolan, but no more than she rides a year, the Zues is a great helmet. I'm not convinced she could live in it the way I live in my Nolan, but she doesn't have to.  Could just be me being biased. To each their own.

Now that Roof helmet is a might interesting. I may have to look into that when I'm ready to replace my Nolan.

and want a good helmet, look at the Vega Summit.  I have had one for 2 years now, and love it.  If you look at most of the online reviews on the helmet, you will see that I am not alone.  It fits great, is well made, and quiet for a modular design

Some of our helmets in the CHP were Fulmer open face.

I bought one after I retired, and was looking in the garage today and found it.   It is still in 1 piece.

Also currently use a Fulmer flip face and love it to death.  The sucker fits my head......    Most Nolan's give me a headache.

Helmets are just like seats and tires, oil and etc.   Ya got to find the one that suits your needs and fit your melon........

Thanks for all the responses. Lot's of options and opinions out there.
With all this info. one could slip into Analysis Paralysis. I did find a NOS Nolan N100 for under $150 online so that's probably the deal for me right now. Subject to change by tomorrow!
I did locate some additional helmet info. for those with interest at:

HJC CL-Max Modular helmets on sale for $108-112.  Black or white.  (So I'm told, you have to email New Enough for the price.)  I always try to find them in a shop for actual head fitment, then go home and order on-line.

I just got a Shark Evoline and absolutely love it.  Well made and incredibly versatile.  I've always ridden with either a full face Shoei or 3/4 HJC, depending on the weather and which bike I was riding but I'm really glad I waited on getting a modular until now because it seems as though some of the compromises of the past are being addressed.  It's actually quieter than some lower-end helmets.  You can check on the reviews for it at webBikeWorld or Helmet Harbor.  Normal caveat, however, everything depends on fit and how/what you ride.
