Tourer fuel tank

Can the beauty ring that goes around the fuel cap on top of the tank be removed separately from the cap itself? Will the cap function without it? I am having my bike painted and need a little more room for the art work. Thank you for any input,

The locking cap is an integral part of that chrome garnish. Take out the two screws under the cap, don't drop them in the tank, and lift off the chrome piece. You'll see the cap comes with it...so guess the answer is "no."

If you're determined to lose the chrome trim piece you might look into a Honda Magna gas cap. It appears to me to be the same as the Valkyrie's, but isn't hinged.

If you will put something under the hinge to take the space of the trim ring thickness(metal), the cap and more importantly the screws will work correctly. If you try it without the spacer it will bend the threaded tabs on the tank.

Thanks all, will stop by the Honda dealer and see if the Magna cap works, if not I will modify the original.
