I'm a member of the Board of Works in New Haven, Indiana. One of our duties is to approve or deny applications for special events involving street closures.

There is a Mayors Ride (first time in New Haven) scheduled later on this month.  It's a kinda hohum ride using the interstates around Ft. Wayne/New Haven.

One of the main events, after the ride will be a a 'Loud Pipe' Contest held in downtown New Haven..  The organizer says that this has to be one of the events because it's a crowd and rider pleaser.  All proceeds go to the local Veterans Memorial here in New Haven.

A Loud Pipe contest is just that, No baffles and no holds barred.!  As many of you know, I'm against loud pipes( straight pipes) but not against nice modified ones.  The mayor doesn't care, the code enforcement doesn't care, and the police chief does what the mayor wants.

There are three members on the BOW, the mayor and two appointees of which I'm one.

Do I vote no, do I vote yes with a statement, or do i just go against my belief and vote yes and keep my mouth shut.

The American Motorcycle Association has to continually fight bad laws because communities eventually get tired of noise.

OK, what would you guys and gals do if you were me??   No flames please, just opinions.

Solo,

You have a vote, and you should cast your vote how you see fit. If this is some thing you are not fond of, then vote NO.

Just my 2 cents.  cooldude

Joe,

I think the ride is a great thing, I think the vote if for the loud pipes??

If your vote is just for this 1 event, and its for a good cause, then why not? Your vote is not to make it permanent, is it? People that don't want to hear the loud pipes don't have to go to the event. Those that do have been warned. Just my 2 cents.

Wayne, be sure and wear ear plugs if ya vote yes.

My personal opinion is vote the way your heart feels.

Loud pipes contest in my thoughts is someone doesn't care for young childrens hearing.......   That is the reason a lot of us are deaf....

If you are in that position as a voice of the town of NH, then I would vote on their part. I dont think personal beliefs should over rule what the city residances want. Being how this is going to a good cause that would be my deciding vote. Loud pipe contest is just another bike game that comes along with bike events like burnout contests. I really doubt the event will take place during prime sleep hours. These events usually won't last long anyway. 20 min is the most I've been to.

I'm sure your heart is in the right place since this will be done for charity.

Tying up loose ends.
The Board of Works meeting was held this morning. One member didn't show up so if I had voted no I could've stopped the event and the loud pipe contest.   I didn't,

I voted yes but asked to have my objection to the loud pipe contest entered into the BOW minutes.
In addition I gave a donation to the organizer of about 30 pair of ear plugs (29db reduction) and asked him to pass them out to parents with children. We don't need to ruin the hearing of kids just because some like loud pipe contests and take their kids to them.

I'll probably give my donation of $10.00 to the ride, I might even ride but I'm not sticking around for the noise, LOL.  BTW, it's on a Sunday so no open taverns (i think).

Hey Wayne,

I'm not a fan of loud pipes either...frankly I don't know how some folks can ride those machines more than a block or so...

But a loud pipe contest...sort of a different thing....kind of like a burn-out contest or a wheelie contest...not something I'd condone for the general street use, but as part of an event/contest in a controlled manner it could be fun and bring folks out...

Of course, I *know* some of these bikes will be ridden to the contest in their "competition trim" but others may be unbaffeled there or such...anyway, I don't see a real conflict with being against loud pipes in general but passing the "okay" to a contest.

My two cents. Worth a plugged nickle after inflation. Cheesy

If I understand your post correctly, the decision to have the contest is a done deal.  You are one of the judges of whose pipes are the loudest.  If this is correct, judge whose pipes are the loudest.

If, on the other hand, you are voting on whether the contest should happen, vote your heart.

That is the democratic way.

Amendment..........  I just read more of the posts. Duh.....  I think you did the right thing, Wayne.

To clarify, the request before the Board was to close some of the downtown streets.  The loud pipe contest, best paint, etc, wasn't part of the request.  However, if I had voted no, the streets couldn't be closed and, in effect, the downtown event would not happen.

Although I once was a councilman here, now, as a member of the Board of Works, I'm appointed by the mayor.  Technically I'm not responsible to the voters but only for New Haven city property.

I thought about it and knew that there was no way that I should use my position as a "Bully Pulpit"; we got too much of that on the National level.

I'm satisfied I got my point across ok and everyone left smiling.  cooldude

I'm not upset by loud pipes. I've had some growlers on bikes in the past. Although, I think that a down town loud pipe contest might be the kind of thing to ensure this will not be an annual event. That has the potential to upset the neighbors.

Vote the way that you want to vote, that's why you get an opinion. Majority will rule and it will play out the way it plays out.

I think you did the right thing, in an event like this you really don't want personal opinions to override what might be right or wrong..In the end you voted from your heart.

The Ride is coming up Sunday, May 23rd.  Meet at New Haven High School at 10AM.  Fee is $10.00, goes toward Veterans Memorial.  !2 noon,  ride I469, I69, and back on I469 for a loop back to New Haven.  Police escort where needed.

Downtown festivities 2PM to 5PM.  Merchants will be open.  The mayor doesn't have an endorsement so he'll will be riding in a Corvette.  I told him that he could ride in the Miata but he'd have a hard time doing that, probably wouldn't fit, LOL.

Rack and Helens has had a million dollar renovation, it's huge!  Good food too.

You could lead the group in the miata but then again most wont be able to keep up with you.  2funny I'm off that day and if the weather is good I might head up after some chores.

Does it encourage the practice all year and are people striving to have the winning bike year after year?

I don't know since I'm not familiar with loud pipes contests.  All I know is that it sends the wrong message to the people that vote and who will demand unreasonable ordinances against motorcycles, IMHO.

I certainly agree with you.  Before long we'll all be sounded out and forget about aftermarket exhaust.
