Better to be judged by 12, then carried by 6.

No. Well, not if the passenger seat over laps the drivers. I tried it before and wont work. I asked M'stang about it and I would have to buy a whole new seat set up. The seat set up with back rest is alot different then the no back rest set up.

His set up, I assume, has the passenger seat over lapping the drivers. This acts as the 'backrest'.

I've only seen he's bike once so I'll have to check and see what he's got.

I love my Utopia backrest, but I have the OEM seat. Wouldn't give it up for anything

Here's a pic of the seat your buddy probably has:  http://www.mustangseats.com/Product.aspx?ID=588  If that's the case, then yes, a Utopia backrest can work, but he will have to slice the cover of his pillion and cut through the foam to the base plate in order to secure the mounting bracket of the backrest.  I just ordered mine yesterday.  Here are the directions I received from Utopia:

Google "Utopia," and you will find some videos of them actually making an installation.  It sounds extreme, but I think it's really not.  (I hope....)

Works for me... Mustang seat with Utopia Backrest on a 1999 Interstate.

Getting the passenger seat on smashes the nose a bit and the back of the driver seat is compressed somewhat but it works well. And it is really comfortable!

BamaJack-  It sounds and looks like you didn't do the slicing and dicing Utopia told me I would have to do.  Is your Mustang seat the one where the pillion overlaps the drivers, like this:  http://www.mustangseats.com/Product.aspx?ID=588  Did you buy a backrest based on the stock seats?  If so, tell me quick so I can call Utopia.  If I don't have to cut my seats, I sure don't want to.

Nope... I didn't do any cutting, slicing or other mangling of the seats. The seat is a plain classic mustang seat... no backrest... I'll go take some pictures...

Okay, Here are some pictures.

In order to get the brace for the backrest into place I had to smash the nose of the passenger seat a bit. This is the seat with the backrest folded forward.

Once the backrest is push back upright the it is not too  noticeable. And I'm holding up the pouch which when in it is down covers the whole thing.

This is a shot of the SuperValk (no passenger seat) and you can see the the back of the driver seat is smashed down somewhat. To get it on, it's easier to slip your hands under the sides of the seat just above the shocks and pull it back and slightly up.

Hope this helps...

I am sort of hi-jacking this one...

I have a standard solo seat on my IS. Is there a backrest available?

Yes, the Utopia standard/tourer backrest will work. You will have to open the two covered holes in the front section of your rear fender to bolt it on. These holes are used to attach the passenger pillon on the standard/tourer and, since you don't normally need them on the IS, they're covered.
