Please, anyone, help me understand this. Help me to understand why our government refuses to do anything about this insanity. Why we put up with being a doormat.
G-Man as you are already well aware...it's really not that complicated.
Republicans historically have not pressed for reform for the following reasons:
(1) Until recently did not see it as a huge problem, cheap labor helped American industry become more competitive with slave labor from Vietnam, China, Philippines, etc.; this had a positive effect on earnings, stock valuations, etc. Clearly this was flawed logic.
(2) Didn't have the balls to take on the Democrats when they demagogued the issue by framing any resistance to illegal immigration or deporting existing illegals as being "racist". Even as a staunch conservative, I can't criticize George Bush enough by being such a pussy on this issue.
Democrats historically have not pressed for reform for the following reason;
(1) Except for Hispanic voters in the Cuban community, Hispanics tend to be the second most loyal voting group for Democrats other than African Americans. Pressing for immigration reform would upset that loyalty.
We can only hope that Republicans have gotten the message and will forge ahead and fix this problem if they are ever given the opportunity by the voters.
As evidenced by the current administration, Democrats still feel it is in their political best interests to maintain the status quo.
