The wife hit a Turkey Buzzard one afternoon on her bike  2funny

Fortunetly it hit her square in the windshield and not her - she kept the bike up-right - knocked the buzzard to the ground - but he was in-flight by the time we all got stoped - no injuries - this happened maybe 10 years ago !!

I've had a close call before with these birds but never hit one yet !!!!  uglystupid2

In May of 2006 I had a hen turkey fly into my office window.  The exterior windows were mirrored and I think she thought she was flying from one treeline into the next when WHAMO!  I was working on some financials at the time and it sounded like a young war had just begun.  In spastic reaction (and crap my pants fear) I flung my mouse into the radiator to my left and another consultant stuck his head in and yelled "who just drove into the building!?"

Once I finally gathered my composure and looked outside the window I saw the hen laying in the grass with one leg giving her final death kick.  I walked to the supply room, snagged a trash liner and walked outside to fetch my dinner.  A small crowd of smokers had quickly gathered as I walked smoothly in, picked up the hen by her feet and walked her over to my trunk.  A quick drive home and some handiwork and she was cleaned and in the fridge.

Now I certainly wouldn't want one to hit me in the head or chest while riding but I'll gladly have one fly into my office window any day of the week.   Smiley

FB and I were riding across West Virginia.... and highway patrol pulled in behind us.  He stayed there for MILES... seemed sooo close, I felt like I could reach back and touch his front bumper.  VERY UN-NERVING!!!!!  I was watching him as much as I was watching the road....
A wild turkey flew across the road and we just barely caught him with the windshield... the turkey went over us and hit the patrol car DEAD in the windshield..... TOOK IT OUT!!!!  I don't mean cracked it, or put a dent in it....TOOK IT OUT!!!!!! laugh the windshield was GONE!!!!!
The patrolman flipped on his lights, pulled us over and gave us a ticket! tickedoff

Both men told officers that they saw wild turkeys along the side of the road as they approached Buckfield village and that one suddenly flew up into Russell's chest for no apparent reason.

These 30 lb suicide bombers regularly flock along the sides of county roads.  When a rider comes along (noise) they fly up on survival instinct (not for no apparent reason).  I have a friend who was so surprised when they flew up in front of him, he swerved hard to avoid impact and dumped his bike and slid (bike and rider).  He'd have been better off to duck and drive thru them, but it was instinct on his part too.

In his 60's and his 3d git-off in several years, he sold his bike ('99 IS-supervalk) to me, and took up kayaking.

If you ride in an area where these wild turkeys congregate on road sides, do what you do for deer (you see)....slow down, honk horns and make noise, and try to get them to move before riding up on them.

Years ago at March AFB CA (Riverside), I tuned my CB750K with vetter fairing and 4 X 1 header pipe, and took it out for a test run on a base road (not open to the public) that ran out to a munitions storage facility out in the low-desert.  Bad road (built in WWII) but always empty, so I ran hard/fast.  As I am slowing down near the end, at the last moment I see a huge brown eagle with big yellow tallons and eyes (over 3 feet tall) perched on a fence post staring menacingly at me...about 15 feet away.  I brake hard, and sit still looking at him.  He launches up off that post with a giant wingspan and, once airborn, heads right toward me.  I ducked behind the fairing-shield and nailed the throttle to make as much exhaust noise as possible, and he flared up away from me and took off.  I was glad to be wearing a helmet that day....I think I spoiled a hunt for him and he was pissed off     (I almost pissed too).

man....this must be "bird story" day???  Roll Eyes

But i do indeed have TWO true stories to add to this.

First one, concerns MY bike. MY Valk. Riding home just before sunset....in the spring several years ago (ok....maybe more like 8 or 9 years ago....hey, I've had the bike for just right at 12 years now!). I'm riding a back county road....and it's pretty hilly close to my house. I'm about 10 miles from home...trying to get home before the sun sets. I'm going up and down hills...up and down. Finally, i top one hill and there...in the middle of the road...is three buzzards dining on road kill. I'm doing about 70. they all three take off in flight....one goes left, one goes right, and one.....goes STRAIGHT FOR ME. I didn't have time to react....BAM....he hit me in the top of the windshield....deflected... and hits me on the top of my helmet! IT HURT....even though it was just a glancing blow. To this day, i have a small chip in the top of my shield where it hit.........

Second story, several years later (but still probalby 3 or 4 years ago?). We're riding home from Cheaha. It's Sherry first ...on her new Rune (I'm thinking this is April of 2004). Then it's Lynn, Mark's wife (of Mark and Lynn from the CAT store...we had flown them out to party and ride Cheaha with us that year!)...Lynn is driving our truck and trailer with left over supplies. Then behind the truck and trailer, it's Mark (on my Valk he borrowed) and me on my Rune, bringing up the rear. Again, we're on back country roads...again...about 10 miles from home. SUDDENLY, we see feathers EVERYWHERE...there was literaly a "vortex" of MANY feathers....all over in front of us. I'm thinking "what the heck is it?". Then i see a LARGE bird...falling over on the side of the road???? What the heck???????????  We drive thru the cloud of feathers and continue home, me baffled by what i THINK....i might have just seen? when we get home, Sherry immediately gets off her Rune and walks to the front of it and starts looking it over. Yep, SHE HIT THAT TURKEY. it was a turkey. she nailed it. Dead center. there were feathers all over the front of her Rune. Remarkably, no damage. Just feathers........and i'm thinking from what i saw.......probably one dead Turkey?

Yea, bird "strikes". Been there, we each got the tshirt........   uglystupid2

One nice spring day about 5 years ago, I took the Trike out to limber her up from the long winter.   coolsmiley tickedoff

Was on the bypass South of town and I had the RPM's up in the, well we won't go there. police angel

Pulled out to pass a car and a Pheasant took flight out of the ditch.   Blasted her headon in the beak into the radiator.    Yup, her head came all the way through that radiator.  Her beak was sticking out the back side.  Pulled over, went to pull her out of the radiator and it started to leak pretty good.  Pushed her head back in, grabbed some pepper I carried in the trunk in case of leaks, poured it in and the leak went to a slight dribble.  Tied her to the radiator so she wouldn't fall out and took off for home.....

That cost me a $1,000 special built radiator from Kidd Radiator in Canada.......    Got a protection panel on the front now, and a pusher fan......   That was scary and I don't particularly want to hit another one....
