I try my best to stay away from these political threads. However in my minds eye the only way we will ever end this flood of illegal immigration is to not only fine the people that hire them but also stick their ass in jail a few months ( none of this will ever happen America loves cheap labor ) .

Absolutely correct.  I'm still fixing stuff on my house that was built 5 years ago when the homebuilder hired the cheapest illegals they could find to subcontract the brick work, roofing, framing etc.  Earlier this year I found out the reason I had a leak in my roof (as have other folks in the neighborhood) is the because the son of a bitch they contracted the work to did not want to take the time to install flashing.

I met a lot of the sub-contractors that built my house...I had to constantly go to the homebuilder and complain about shortcuts....I guess I should have climbed onto the roof and checked that job also.  I only met one contractor that was an American...they were the folks that installed the cabinets in the house.  One of them told me that they would not be around once the builder found an illegal that would do it for half the price.

Pissed off in Tennessee.....

I agree with the fine on those that hire illegals but the fine should make them bleed ... say 50% gross revenue. Sticking their A$$ in jail for a month or 2 won't change anything, look at all the career criminals.

You stick some CEO's ass in jail for 3 or 4 months for every illegal in the place for instance like the millionaire CEO's of the carpet mills in Dalton , Georgia ....Oh yes I do believe without a doubt it would stop.....No Card...No Job... It's just that easy and if you hire a illegal say hello to big Billy Bob Bubba and his huge friend Jamel Mohammed Willie in a 8x10 cell  cooldude

I've hired AMERICAN contractors who show up on job day with a crew plucked right off the corner or from Home Depot.  Upon arriving home from work each day, I'd notice some real shabby workmanship.  I'd point it out to him the next morning, he'd get annoyed but have to fix it anyway.  I watched one of the workers apply stone to the outside of the foundation without even using a level string.  With my eye, I could see the sag in the center, like the bricks were smiling at me.  I told the contractor that his price was way too high for the work I was getting and that he'd get nothing more from me and I'd report him to consumer affairs in the county if it continued (thank you OSS for that bit of advice).  He was a real schmuck because every day he'd have to re-do something that I felt was not up to my standards.

I do have to admitt, though, I have hired guys from Home Depot over the years.  I'd get prices of $500 and $600 for seasonal property cleanup from local businesses, only to have them hire these guys to do the job anyway.  I just avoided the middleman and saved $400.

Cheap labor is one thing...

Skilled labor is some thing totally different...

You get what you pay for in some cases...

G-Man, this story of yours caused me a chuckle.

It was the opposite when we built our house.  The brick layer was as Caucasion American (pc?) as they get.   At the same time, one of my neighbors' houses' brick were being layed by some workers from south of our border.    The guy doing my brick showed up maybe two days a week, poured more already mixed concrete out in the middle of my front yard so he could leave early at noon (I presume to make up for having arrived late at 10:30ish), than he used laying the bricks.  Before the job was done he asked the gen'l contractor for more cement mix and was shown the huge pile of wasted mat'l and told he'd have to make it up himself by buying what he shouldn' t have needed to finish.  When the job was done, it looked like shiite with small holes here and there, and splatters sloshed everywhere, with zero cleanup having been done.

When all was said and done, my neighbors' brick job looked like the cream of the crop of brick laying while mine looked like poo.   And accordinng to the neighbor - at less than half the cost per brick mine had cost.

I guess poor workmanship can come from both sides of the border.

(I'm NOT supporting ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION in this post)  just sharing my limited experience of migrant workmanship.

I have hired some painting and drywall work done in my house over the last 5 years and huge remodel.  I told the guy (Owner) that I didn't want ANY illegal labor in my house.  That I'd check green cards and ID's.  He, PERSONALLY did the finish work and painting in my house.

Help me understand something..... What does cheap labor and poor workmanship have to do with illegal aliens?  My home was built by some of the lousiest carpenters I have ever seen.  They were Americans.

Illegal Aliens do not belong here regardless of their skill level, and I know there are some that are very good at what they do.  An aquaintence of mine has a home in Arizona and Michigan.  He was complaining the other day about hiring a crew, about a year ago, to do landscaping in AZ.  He said they did a great job, worked hard, and for a reasonable cost.  He found out most of the crew were illegal aliens, so he let the contractor go.  He found another, made sure they were Americans, and got the poor workmanship, they were slow, yadda yadda.  I asked him what he did then.  He said he rehired the first Contractor to complete the project.

The problem is they are illegally here, not they are lazy, not they work cheap, or much of anything else.  If they came here on visas or had permits, would they get the same attitude from people?  Probably, because most do not see them as belonging here regardless of if they are legal or not.

We don't want nor need the Immigration Reform that the politicians are talking about. What they are seeking is more of an amnesty bill, making most of the illegals that are here legal.(VOTERS)         That would be a faster track to bankruptcy that the one we are on right now. The entitlement programs alone would choke us. What we need is to close the borders, enforce the laws we have, and allow sensible immigration that is monitored. Who knows? we may even get migrants that would be proud to be here.

The issue with Mexico's president was a farce, do you really think he wants the borders closed? HECK NO, a conservative estimate is that $6 BILLION leaves this country for relatives in Mexico, Another estimate puts it at $15 BILLION, that would be the second largest outflow of cash from this country, the only one larger would be oil.

If you feel strongly about this issue, Go to
www.numbersusa.com
and check the site out, sign up for their fax system. (faxing your local representatives) They have been trying for years as a non-partisan group to get sensible immigration laws. (look for the gumball video, it's quite eye opening)
