OK, here it goes. Replaced the pads front and back. OEM from Honda direct line.   FRONT, old ones did NOT have the pad and metal backing. New ones did.  YES, I compressed the pistons in the caliber all the way FLUSH with the housing. They just would not go on, so I took off the pad and clip, and no problem. So , WHAT GIVES??  Now to the back pads, Old pads had the pad and the metal backing, new ones ( OEM HONDA) did not! So I took the old pad and metal backing and put them on the new pads and it seems OK??  What the hell going on here? Maybe a Honda screw up? Anybody had this problem?   tickedoff The pads I took off came on the bike NEW in 1999. 36,000+miles . 1999 tourer.  Thanks folks!

Are you sure you didn't get them reversed (front to back and back to front).  The back is supposed to have the chrome (stainless maybe) covers and the whole assembly will be thicker than the front.

Ya beat me to that question.

Sounds like the pads got reversed in the boxes or you did it by accident.....

The worst part of it is, I don't have a set to go look at.

The thickness measurement of new OEM pads (just the brake pad itself not including the backing) is - front 4mm and back 6mm. This might be the way to tell if Honda put the wrong ones in your box.
