installing the driveshaft back into the u-joint???  I have tried for almost an hour to reinstall the pumpkin and driveshaft and no matter what I do, the driveshaft is just not mating up to the u-joint.  I finally gave up b/c my back was killing me and I was really tempted to throw the driveshaft through the window.  Help me please before I hurt myself!

Look up in there with a flash light... the u-joint is probably hanging at some angle that is different
than the angle that the swingarm is hanging. You can be able to see what angle to move the swingarm
so that when you slide the shaft up in there the u-joint will be ready to accept it...

Hubcapsc has a real good idea, never occurred to me to look in there. Mine sometimes goes in easy. Other times it requires several short breaks to bury an ax in a stump.
I always have the swingarm level and rotate the drive shaft if no success at first. Wiggle, push, curse, and if all else fails threaten the sob with certain destruction if it doesn't cooperate.

and that will help align the ujoint with the drive shaft.

Get the swingarm up to a level or straight in position. Put the flange in the final drive and use it to turn shaft back and forth alittle while trying to stab u-joint. It's about like stabbing a transmission input shaft sometimes it's easy sometimes it's a bi#$%.

Get some old cable TV wire or something close to that size. Shine a flashlight up the tube ( I use a old cb truck antenna ) and pick the back of the u-joint up then slide the cable tv wire under the u-joint.The driveshaft will go in with no problem when it does pull the wire out. I've been where you are fightin' that thing for over a hour. I can use this cable TV trick and have it in , in less than 2 minutes everytime.

One last thing to do to help out...take the flange into the pumpkin and use it to turn the driveline.  That will help engage the splines into the u-joint.

Get the swingarm level.  Bike in neutral.   Rattlebars "how-to" says to "stir" the shaft.  I was having trouble too, but I stirred the shaft/pumpkin around in a little circle from the back end, and in she went.

Now lets talk about three hours trying to get the forkin boot on the top of the swingarm.  After all that time, I think I would have saved time to just pull the forkin swingarm entirely.  And I used enough lube for the damn thing to be a big condom.

I've found the best way for me to get the boot back on is to wait until bike is back on sidestand and work under bike from off side,. Bent needle nose pliers also help.

I did work from under the bike (while still on the jack).  I could get two tabs of the boot on from underneath... but could not get that last tab on over the swingarm and under the frame.  If I ever have to do this again, I'm going to install grommets in the rear tabs (the front pops right on), and tie some hundred pound fishing line thru them so I can pull the bastage on.   tickedoff

It also helps to put the bike in gear to keep the output shaft from turning.  Hoser

I think Lady Draco rolls the boot up on itself a little, gets it real close and unrolls it right onto the grooves...
she says it is easy...

I had my starter off the only time I messed with the u-joint, and it was real easy, but taking the
starter off is not easy, so that's not a plan...

THAT is the ticket ....I just did mine a couple weeks ago and thats all it takes and works great.  Temporarily put the drive flange in the pumkin - transmission in neutral and rotate the flange back and forth while you're putting the drive shaft back in.  Once you get the DS back in put the bike back in gear - remember to NOT tighten the four nuts until AFTER the axle.

Simplest method...

Get the swing arm ABOVE horizontal. Driveshaft in the pumpkin. Stick the pumpkin in the swing arm till the studs line up to the holes in the swing arm...and then just wiggle the crap out of it.

It'll go home every time. No fiddling with the ujoint. No broomsticks/etc. It cannot miss the joint...if the drive pumpkin goes all the way in, the shaft is in the joint.

The trick seems to be the swing arm ABOVE horizontal...I've never had one take me more than about 20 seconds once you do that.

Too funny....  Only reason is because it happened to me the other day..

I was working on my I/S and was able to get the DS up in the U-joint but not in the splines.  I wiggled moved the flange in the pumpkin, raised the swing arm above "horizontal" and still no go.  I was holding the pumpkin and up with my left hand.  Sweat dripping off my chin and nose and ever nice word I could think of was being shared w/ the bike.

I had the computer on at my work bench (arms length away), using my right hand I started reading the Shop manual.  Maybe I was missing something.  I have done this procedure  a dozen times and never had the trouble I did like this last time  Angry   So.. .As I fought with this thing and had my right hand and head turned to the keyboard and monitor and as I was returning my eyes back to the bike I just put a little pressure on the back of the pumpkin and it SLID IN!   WTH!!!   ???  I thought...  "Quick put the four nuts on fast!!"

Sometimes it's easy and other times it seems to be a P.I.A!!

Hang in there it will go!   cooldude
