Thinking about replacing 12 yr. old belt (pre-emptive)
Chet's page shows NAPA, Gates, and Goodyear altenatives (although the Gates number seems to not exist).
Any thoughts-pro's/con's on these or stay Honda?

I just bought 2 Gates belts from O'Rielly's.   It will have a 'T' in front of the #.  The true # is T0275.   The 'T' stands for Timing.

excessive underhood heat and sunlight shorten belt life.

a valkyrie has no underhood heat and sees no sunlight. honda only recommends inspection at 100k.
remember honda would warranty these bikes for 7 yrs, one could put 100k on in 4-5yrs.
EPA requires timing belts to last 100k in cars.
search out high mileage GL1500 goldwings and u will find most change belts at 100k. age has nothing to due with it.
YMMV and its your time and money.

Good point(s).
Maybe I'll put it off for a while.

I can't seem to find these belts on that site, either through a part # search or by looking under the motorcycle part search. Can you give me a link directly to the T275 timing belts?

No place that I know of can beat that price.

When I got my IS I replaced the belts.  10-11 years and about 30K miles.  Several of the "teeth" were starting to peel off of the belt.  None had actually come off yet but the potential for disaster was there.  I would reccomend changing them because it is a pretty cheap fix.

I had the same questions a few weeks back. My mileage was low, but the bike is 12yrs old. I opted to change them. I bought two goodyear belts (duralast) from Auto-Zone that cost $23.00ea. The price on the post before mine was far less.

My belts looked good, but for $46.00 I felt better. While in there, I switched to a 4 degree Trigger Wheel. The bike gets up and goes now.

There was only one thing I will warn you about. On the crank shaft, there is a ring that has a mark on it. It aligns with an arrow to the right. When I touched the ring, it spun and wansn't connected to the crank. All I did was mark the tooth that aligned with the pointer so I was assured the crank was in the right position with the cam shafts. Rechecking the pointers was easy after tightening the idlers down.

Good luck!   Bill

I tried ordering from NAPA about a month ago-they wanted about $80, and I would have to come back to pick them up. I thought I could order them online cheaper even with shipping.
