leak

I didn't see a giant chuck hole the other day and hit it head on. Hard. Today I noticed oil on the outside of the front left shock area.
Was riding two up with my son..total weight around 300 lbs between us.
98 Tourer with 31,000 miles.
Looking for help.
Thanks.

Hard hits.
Maybe it'll stop on it's own.
Maybe you blew a seal - requires service [recommend both legs]
Maybe you created a stiction issue only by knocking the legs out of alignment - need to adjust at the clamps and axle.
Depending on the mileage I would just replace the seals in both legs and if it's a stiction issue that will self correct with the seal change out [as long as the forks are R & R'd].

You probably just compressed some crap under the seal causing the leak. Upi can work a piece of 35mm film under the dust seal and the oil leal without taking it apart. Once you work it in, go around the shaft a few times to dislodge the crud. It may continue to leak for a day or two as it works the oil out from between the 2 seals, but it should quit. If you havent lost a ton of oil, you may not notice anything. Search fork oil and you should find a procedure to measure the oil in the forks by pulling off the caps. If the leak continues, you will need to tear the fork down and replace the seals. You may also want to replace the springs with Progressive. It's a nice upgrade for cheap $$$.

I'd guess a hard hit just puked a bit of oil past the seal. Wipe it off and keep riding it. Check it periodically. Might not have a leak.
