anyone else have problems with Amsoil

last wensday i changed to amsoil 10w40
thursday i rode about 40 miles to town and back and 5 miles before i got home the valk backfired real loud out the left side under hard acceleration, i didnt think much of it and went home and parked it

friday morning about 150 miles down the road a valve started clattering, i ended up with 1400 miles on it before i got home

i have been determined to prove its not the oil, so today i adjusted all the valves and changed the exhaust gaskets

#4 and #6  exhaust valves on the left side where i hear the noise was very loose

but nothing has helped so tomorrow i am changing back to lucas

Well, let us know.  My guess is that it has nothing to do with the oil at all.  If two valves suddenly got loose, Id check the torque and gap on all of of them.  The way I remember it....Loose means they are not opening as much which means they can burn......if that happened no oil is gonna fix it, but yet oil doesnt cause valves to loosen....

Sorry to hear about your problem. The only thing I'm sure about is it's not the oil just a bad coincidence. You might want to check out other things while your at it. It's always good to maintain your vehicle.

I've been using Amsoil for years both in the engines and in the final drives. Helps the final drive run cooler for one thing. Be sure you're positioning the crank correctly when checking/adjusting the valves. I like to do it with the plugs pulled, you're not fighting the compression when turning the crank.

Have you done the desmog? them Pair valves can really makes some noise, Do you have a Dyna 3000? they will act up time to time and will Backfire.

I recently changed to Amsoil motorcycle which is 20w-50.  After I road it a couple of hundred miles I noticed what I thought was a chatter as well.  The more I road though I noticed it was not the valves but the pair valves themselves.

Amsoil made my engine run so much smoother after the crud had come off of everything that all I could hear was the engine whine and pair valves.

I am closing on 1000 miles on the oil change and plan on changing it again just to get the crud out that the Amsoil released.

BTW, I plan on doing the pair valve removal process after RedEye gets his Chrome kit ready for sale.

Did you change from a heavier weight oil?  Like 20w50, lighter oils will sometimes allow sounds to seem louder and be louder.

How far out were the valves?

If your issues were/are oil related (quality related) your symptoms would indicate rapid wear in the valve train and possible lack of lubrication. It is hard to believe that any decent quality oil would cause that unless something was very wrong..... ( I have no experience with Amsoil, so I cannot speak directly to there quality)

You might want to send in a sample of the oil from the engine to an oil analysis lab, if you think that is the issue. And do an oil/filter change back to the original oil you were using, NOW.

Just re read the post, i had exhaust nut at the head-pipe loose on left side last week, sounded like valve Tappet, got it hot and very carefully cranked it down, no more valve Noise, tight valve will burn a valve, loose will help prevent Float, i run all mine looser than factory spec's , too tight will keep valve from closing all the way and burn a valve, safer loose.

Did you mean .014 or .0014????

.0014 is not that much. Matter of fact it would not make that much noise if just .0014 out.
Did the adjustment actually make a difference in the noise?

.014 different story - something has happened! Was the adj nut loose??

I wonder if the night before you had carbon-ed up an exhaust valve causing the backfire.
A carbon-ed exhaust valve will make a noise and then stop and start again later.
It will come and go at odd times.

Carbon on the valve stem is the what causes it to stick and release.

Also wonder if the backfire was on 6 and caused a seating problem after??

I would put air in the cylinders with the valves closed or a leak down test. I would also check the cam timing just a thought. A compression test would not be the best choice here. I doubt oil has anything to do with the problem, I would be more suspect of the filter if I was going that route.

Possible take the filter apart and check for debris??

You didn't say what type of filter you used but if I remember right???? there where some problems with the Amsoil filters a while back.Been awhile but who knows if is old stock or a new problem.I believe the internals where collapsing causing oil starvation.Like I said been awhile so you moght want to check archives.
