I know this isn't bike related, but I was in the fire service for 9 years and we always tried to raise awareness for people to have smoke detectors. I have been out of the service for a while now and haven't been as active in public awareness, but after a tragic fire last night next door to a friends house, I feel the need to remind all of my extended family (you guys)
Please make sure you have one in each room where some one sleeps (bed rooms) and one in the hallways etc.
one thing some people do not realize is small children 5-15 have a hard time waking up to smoke detectors, they have ones that operate at different frequencies that helps wake kids... you can also buy ones that you can program your voice to be played back so kids wake up easier.
the easiest way to remember to change battery's in smoke detectors is to change out the battery's every time the time changes... (daylight savings)
this is a video clip I dug up about kids and smoke detectors,
