So, after getting done mowing the lawn, I decided that an adult beverage would be in order. Being of Scottish heritage, scotch on the rocks immediately comes to mind. Low and behold, I find that I am periously low on the main ingredient!!! So a trip down the street is in order to a local drug store that also sells liquor. Good price on cheap talking scotch. Grab a 1.5l bottle and head to the cash register to pay for it. Put it on the counter and the middle aged cashier looks at me and asks for my I.D. Say what???? She repeated the request. I looked dumbfounded, and said that she must be kidding. No she wasn't. Now folks, I can't even fathom a guess as to when the last time was that I was carded for an alcohol purchase! It has to have been at least 30 years and who knows where that took place! So, I pulled out my wallet and flipped open the part holding my license to view. She dutifully checked my birthdate, repeating it to me. I exclaimed that it had been years, no, eons since I had been carded. Well, she said get used to it, the new state law requires that ALL alcohol purchases include an I.D. check now in the state of Indyanner. An older gentleman behind me, also getting ready to buy alcohol made the comment that it is truly ironic that you have to show I.D. to purchase liquor, but NOT to vote. But that's progress. Like I said, almost made my day. Almost.....

I did exactly the same thing. Last week I went to the liquor store to get some Mc Gregors to supplement my Chivas and they asked me for id. Wow!, I must be looking younger at 82 years of age.
The clerk told me it will soon be Federal Law. Your tax dollar at work.

Yep, My 55 year old uncle and 52 year old cousin were both carded at the liquor store last Saturday night. I do not believe (and I could be wrong) that the law actually takes effect until July 1, 2010. Likely the result of the Indiana State Excise Police sting last year where almost a third of the retailers sold to minor decoys. See http://iphone.indystar.com/posts/366Anyway, the only defense to the requirement to require an ID for off premises consumption is if the customer is or appears to be more than 50 years old. Here’s the new law: Indiana Code § 7.1-5-10-23 (a) It is a Class B misdemeanor for a permittee or an employee or agent of a permittee to recklessly, knowingly, or intentionally sell, barter, exchange, provide, or furnish another person an alcoholic beverage for consumption off the licensed premises without first requiring the person to produce: (1) a driver's license; (2) an identification card issued under IC 9-24-16-1 or a similar card issued under the laws of another state or the federal government; or (3) a government issued document; bearing the person's photograph and birth date showing that the person is at least twenty-one (21) years of age. (b) In a criminal or administrative proceeding, it is a defense to a charge under this section that the individual to whom the permittee or employee or agent of the permittee sold, bartered, exchanged, provided, or furnished alcoholic beverages for consumption off the licensed premises was or reasonably appeared to be more than fifty (50) years of age. (c) A permittee who sells alcoholic beverages for consumption off the licensed premises shall post on the permittee's premises, in a location plainly visible to consumers, a sign: (1) that is at least eight and one-half (8 1/2) inches by eleven (11) inches; and (2) that sets forth the following language in at least 20 point type: STATE LAW REQUIRES IDENTIFICATION FOR SALES OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES FOR CARRYOUT. (d) The commission may charge a fee for a sign that meets the requirements of subsection (c) and that is prepared by the commission. However, the fee charged for a sign under this subsection may not exceed the cost of preparing the sign. On a brighter note, we can now buy booze on election day and on Sunday from 7 a.m to 3 a.m. (Monday). Sunday sales used to be from 10 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. (Monday). All Sunday sales are still restricted to on premises consumption – NO carry out. Finally, there is an ID requirement to vote. Indiana Code § 3-11-8-25.1. I personally know the election officers at my polling place and they make me show them an ID (and knowing the election officers, I am sure they would not allow me to vote if my license was expired). Go figure.

Don't know how they control voting where you're at, but in Alabama they have a list of registered voters for our precinct. Now, the first lady asks for a photo ID, (known all them personally for 29 years) but they are still gonna ask for that ID. She marks my name through with a highlighter. The second lady asks if I'm voting Rep. or Dem. I then proceed to sign my name on the list and get my ID back. No way you're getting past these ole gals. You may be registered somewhere else but you ain't gonna vote twice in Kinsey. And the id thing to purchase, who knows, may be that if someone's license has been pulled for dui, they can curtail some of the drunk driving. ??????

Funny you should mention this.
Several weeks ago on a Sunday morning I stopped by the local grocery store to get some tonic to go with my favorite which is Southern Comfort. Two people in front of me both bought alcoholic beverages and the cashier asked both for ID. When it was my turn and my four bottles of tonic moved up on the line she took one quick look and before running the first bottle over the scanner asked me for my ID. I asked her when did they start to premix the tonic with the alcohol. She looked at the bottle in her hand, blushed and apologized and rang up my non toxic mix.

After getting a dozen coleman lantern fuel containers at Wal-Mart, I went to the local CVS to get some Sudafed. I only wanted 20 packs of the stuff and I had to show my ID and sign a form. Plus she only let me have 2 packs. Kits been lucky Doc. She was never carded till she was 21. Or was I the lucky one?

A fellow Hoosier, I was carded recently, also. Was told that although it goes into affect in July, the owners of the stores want to make sure people are already used to it, both the clerks, and customers, so there's isn't any problems come July. I think he said the fine was pretty stiff, although he didn't tell me what it was.
Used to be able to have an open container as long as you weren't drunk. Cop friend told me that changing that law, was the worst thing he'd ever seen them do. Used to be, a worker would stop for a beer or two, then take one with, for the road, and another couple for when he got home. VERY seldom did they stop drunks on the road. But, after the law changed, the same worker would pound down 4 or 5, then guzzle the last one down, before hitting the road. Then, get really drunk, half way home. And he said he stops 10 times as many now, and they are usually pretty plowed.
don't get me wrong, I'm NOT an advocate of drinking and driving - just pointing out that sometimes things done, to protect us, don't necessarily do so...
