Getting the girl ready for a run to Western Montana end of July .... just have to wire up the harness and she should be ready to go. Went thru everything from front to back.

How does she look ?? See anything needing attention ??

Are the safety chains crossed eacxh other on the bottom.

In other words, the chain fastened to the right side should attach to the left side on the bike.

The left side should be fastened to the right.

Flame away, but don't be in an accident in California and they aren't crossed.

Looks good.  I will be meeting my brother from Fox Home, MN in Montana at the end of June.  My brother is a recovering HD rider that now rides a VTX.  My path may cross yours on the return trip.

There will be a small cooler inside towards the rear. We will be Motel-ing it mostly with occasional nites at KOA cabins.  Keep the heavy stuff (clothes) fore of the axle .... sleeping bags in the rear. KOA has the Kamping Kabins and then you can have a campfire at nite (if there is no fire ban).

When I travel I make no reservations and wing-it on the fly .... has worked out in the past and is more laid back .... no commitments !!

I have no experience pulling a trailer, but safety chains? On a car or truck, sure, but on a bike? I would think its better to let the trailer go if it came un-hitched rather than find out what it would be like to have it drag the back of the bike around...
Just sayin,

Fred:

It has to do with the law.  You are REQUIRED to have safety chains on vehicles. Fot the safety of OTHER people.  Ever had a trailer come off, and go scooting into the opposing lane, head on into a car full of people?  Not a pretty picture!  Dead peoples relatives do not like it.

Thanks MP .... you beat me to it  cooldude

I know the chains should be crossed (for tongue to drop down on) and my photo clearly shows they are not. I quick hooked it up that way just for pic. Is the "chains crossed" thing a requirement or just a means for tongue to drop down on ?? Reason I ask is I was wondering if a person can install a grade 8 bolt between the chains for tongue to drop down on ??

Not a legal requirement, but sure the best way.

It is not just to catch the tongue, although it does that very well.  Think of the chains in a turn.  If hooked up straight, when you make a turn, the outside chain has to have enough slack to take the corner, ie , needs to be quite a bit longer.

However, when crossed, they do not have to be as much longer to make the turn.  So, it allows you to have less slack in the chains, while still having enough to make corners, and go thru dips, without getting tight.

You want them crossed, and as short as possible, without binding. Or catching on the ball bolt.

Fred:

If you have the chains hooked as described above, it will not cause you to wreck your bike if it comes off.  There will be looseness, but not bad at all.

My Escapade trailer from 1999 has both chains connected to a grade 8 bolt on the tongue.  It is not really possible to cross the chains.
I cross them when pulling my travel trailer with the Big White Dodge,so I DO agree that is the best way.
I think it has something to do with the MC trailer only having a single square tube for a tongue and not the traditional "V" of heavier trailers.

I hope I never have to find out how well, or not so well, those chains work.

Thats exactly the way mine is .... that's why I was thinking of putting a grade 8 bolt between the chains to spread them out and also have something for the tongue to drop on. Maybe adjust the length of chains so that if tongue comes off it never touches the ground ??

i think the only thing you need is a custom paint job on the trailer to match the cycle!!  now that would be sweet!!

Sodbuster,
Does the tongue have a swivel? When I towed 20 years ago, I had a swivel in the neck and it it made it easier on cornering.

Nope .... no swivel. To be honest with ya I don't think it's a problem without it. I took the trailer out to Colorado two years ago with my '83 Wing and didn't have a problem .... except the lack of power which prompted me to look for a bigger bike.
