I've been helping a new Valk rider with his 1999 IS.
It has a clunking noise in the rear drive.
I thought it was the U-joint.
We inspected the U-joint yesterday.
It moved easily with no noise or gritty feeling.
We now think that the noise is coming from the final drive.
we inspected the ring gear through the oil fill hole.
The gear looks great the oil looked great.
We put a small magnetic retriever in the drian hole.
we didn't pick up anythnig with the magnet.
WHAT'S MAKING NOISE ?

We now suspect that a bearing may have gone bad in the final drive.
we ran it several times up on a motorcycle jack.
it clunks now and then not continuously.
when the rear brake is applied it grumbles a little under load.
We are thinking about tearing down the final drive.

How should we proceed.
Do we need any special tools to tear down/reassemble the final drive?
Any other tests ?
drive it till it breaks ?

Thanks in advance for any experience on final drive noise, cures.

Mine was the left side wheel bearing. Fell apart when I took the dust seal off.

Doubt it's the Final Drive, they're pretty much bullit-proof (as long as you keep oil in them).  Only thing that goes wrong with them is the splines wear if not lubed or installed correctly every 10k +/-.  Check wheel bearings and the dampers in the wheel behind the Driven Flange.  If the dampers wear-out, you will feel clunking on accel/decel.  You should not be able to move the rubber dampers more than 1/8" with your finger tops.  New ones fit snug without any movement.

Did you check the pinion cup splines, and the driveshaft splines that go in them?

You'd be surprised just how much a bad wheel bearing can conjure up.  Can feel and sound much worse than it really is.

If the Valk wasn't just so perfectly smooth, we'd never feel and hear all of these things until it became really bad!

If the splines are dry and rusty looking, clean them up, well.....you can refer to Shoptalk.
It quieted mine down.

It IS the wheel bearings.
After reading the other thread on wheel bearings I remembered that there was a lot of space between the bearings, enough so that the spacer was able to move quite a bit. I thought it was odd but didn't put it all together until hours after reading the wheel bearing post.

Thanks for the help.
If that thread wasn't up at the time I posted I would have had a hard time believing it.
