Can a person from Norway with an international driver's license buy and register a motorcycle in the USA without a residential address there? What about insurance?
A friend is planning a trip over to the U.S. this summer and buy in Interstate, register it and ride a few weeks before he ship the bike home to Norway.

I know they can in Louisiana.  I'm not sure about the rest of the states but I doubt it would be a problem.

Dag:  Ya got any idea where he is going to buy the bike?

By that I mean what state?

Has he already got his eyeball on one?

If ya can answer any of these yes, contact that state DMV and check with them.

In my 32 years as a LEO, I've never been asked that question or heard it asked.

I know when you are from one state, buy in another state it can be done.  Ya have to pay the selling states tax and all of that crap.......

When he gets here and finds something, BEFORE any $$$$$$ changes hands, check with that states DMV.........

If all else fails, find someone from the board in that state and ask them if they will let you register the bike in as him living at the VRCC members address..

It is probably not the best action to do, but anything is possible, the impossible just take a little longer........

I'm sure you can in Florida.
But, the riding is pretty warm here (for another 3 months)-he would have to head north right away!

I am thru this whole story here in PA.
You can buy and own a vehicle.
But you can't register it and Insurance is also not easy will cost you a arm 'n leg.
What I did.
Brother has registred the Bike and also the Insurance is on his Name.
I'am as second Driver on the insurance policy.
So far no problem and that since 2005

I would check with the local DMV.  I have seen a lot of people visiting the US buy a car or RV and travel for a few months and then sell it when they go back home.

The best would be if he bougth the bike and was able to ride the bike for two weeks in the USA with the existing title. He will fly over to NY mid July and stay for about two weeks.

He want a black IS in very good shape.

I don't know how it would work for your friend...but a possible solution would be to get a temporary tag from the state the bike is purchased from.  This would allow your friend to ride the bike for up to a month without truly registering it.  All you should need is a bill of sale from the previous owner.  I am not sure if insurance is required or not.  It has been too long since I have gotten a temp tag to remember.  I would think though that he could get insurance from his home country and it would work.

I sold my Sabre to a Canadian gentleman and he was able to get temp tags easily in Colorado.  I think that it would not be a problem.  He needs to Google the licensing agency in the state/county that he will register the bike and get their phone number.

Guys, send Dag a personal message or an email if you want to sell him your bike.  Post an ad in the Classifieds if you want to sell it to anyone who'll buy.

You will have to confirm but..... We Canadians can buy in the US and transport to canad by road and although we have close trading ties to the US we are foreigners ..... insure from home and in some states you can escape the state sales tax as a non-resident if you take delivery of the vehicle out of state... you need to establish that the vehicle is free and clear of any outstanding leins etc. before US customs will allow you to export the vehicle... I.E. - for shipment to Canada the US ciustoms requires a minimum of 3 full business days to check before they will allow export.

It wasn't just you, Ted.  I removed several posts from this thread.

I know it seems petty, but we have to draw the line somewhere.

Hopefully not, Dag.  They can PM you with offers.

(Usually the best deals on bikes are the ones that are already for sale, seldom the ones that get offered only when the owner learns someone is looking.   Wink  )

Some time ago I hosted a Winger from Italy. He purchased a GW in Washington state. Traveled the western U.S. for a couple months. The end of his journey was back at the beginning. The fellow he purchased from housed and sold the bike for the new owner after the recent new owner went back to Italy. Don't know the details, but his vacation went well. Yrmv,
