Looking for suggestions for a non-mechanic. I found out today that at 5k RPMs my alternator is charging at 12.5 volts. I am leaving for a trip from Northern California to South Dakota in about 10 days. Any help is appreciated.

If it is going bad, get one of these alternators. Lot cheaper than what the Fiche says to put in it.

Alternator Options
'97 Goldwing Aspencade Part # is 31100-MT2-015 "The terminal & plastic insulator are different where you connect the alternator battery wire. You have to take off the capacitor that is mounted on the Gold Wing alternator and rotate the front housing to match the holes from the Valkyrie model so that it will fit."
As per Ron Ayers Parts Fiche, alternator 31100-MT2-015 fits on the 30 following GL1500 Goldwing models :
Honda GOLD WING GL1500 (1988 to 1990)

Pull it and take it to a local starter and generator shop and they will be able to fix you up.

Not always Damon. We got 4 starter/generator/alternator shops within a 45 mile circle.
NONE, and I mean none of them would I trust to fix it.
The Trike, I can have either one of them (starter/alternator) off in less than 5 minutes, had to be pulled 6 times before they got it right.
I don't think I'd care to have to pull that sucker more than once on the Valk........

Call Ken at MARS alternator in Indiana. Getting it into place is the hard part, but with persistence, it is doable. Jeff http://mysite.ncnetwork.net/resp3jbj/

+1 on MARS. I have one, works great. Rebuilt to better than new specs. He can get on to you in a couple days. Trip back on! I would use his over OEM new, even at the same price!

I was too quick to act and ordered a new one through the closest dealer (120 miles round trip) before I got the MARS contact info. The dealer met/beat internet prices (except for MARS) and want $70 for the install. The new alternator will be installed next friday. Thanks for all the help.

Found out some good news. My alternator had a loose ground. Tightened it up and all is well. Dealer refunded my money for the alternator and charged me 1/2 hour to test mine. I hope I found a dealer that I can trust.
