412 shock upgrade-time for upgrade...advice?

I have some 412's on my bike that are about 4 years old I would guess. I had new fork springs put in at the same time... and I remember there was a big improvement to the ride over the stocks and springs..... .but now I'm thinking it's still a little harsh riding. Doesn't take bumps and potholes as well as I think is should.... but it really hit home after I test drove a 2010 Victory Crossroads for about 45 minutes and wow- what a smooth ride... You almost feel disconnected from the road as is swallows up the bumps.
I really noticed the difference when I drove home on my Valk over the same road I had just test drove the Victory on earlier. Made me think I need a change of shocks. They told me there was an air-monoshock on the Victory. Got me to thinking if a set of 440's is alot better...maybe worth the $$.
The older I get, the more it's all about comfort. I saw a post yesterday about whether or not to rebuild 412's.... Maybe it's time for oil change in the forks too? The shock pre-load is about in the middle position right now... I never ride 2 up and don't run heavily loaded very often.
I have cousin who puts Ohlen's on all his Beemer's and Ducatis... but that's way to outta my price range. I think he pays about $3400 for Ohlens' front and back.....
So I'm stuck in reality here trying to make my Valk a little smoother over the bumps.
