From what I understand, the starter relay is in place to kill power to the headlamp when starting the valk. The way my bike was wired (aftermarket) this functionality has been removed, but the relay is still present, along with the melted plug that plugs into it...

Does this relay do anything else besides disable the headlamp upon starting? If not, could I eliminate it? I like simple.

Thanks!

Sorry to tell you but you understand wrong.

The relay is to put the high amps into the starter and to save the starter switch. Unfortunately there is no relay on the headlamp circuit at all and this is one of the mods that you can do to save the starter contacts.

Have a look at the wiring diagram here.

If you want to save the switch have a look at the modification that you can do [urlhttp://www.rattlebars.com/mtz/starter.html]here[/url]. This link also covers the starter relay problem.

That's cool, I appreciate it. One thing I have not really learned (yet) is how to read wiring diagrams, I just look for burnt up parts and replace as found...

I understand the concept of a relay and how it prevents high draw from passing through a switch, and I guess if I had had my thinking cap on this morning I would have realized it's primary purpose.

My switch is an aftermarket HD style switch but I'll look at the link and see if it applies to my situation nonetheless.

Thanks.
