Perhaps those businesses hiring illegal aliens would stop if the minimum wage laws were enforced and they could not get away with hiring them for less.  It would remove the incentive.  When I worked in New Orleans and ICE officers came in to shop, the illegals would head for the back door until the coast was clear.  There was never a question as to who had papers and who did not.

I asked if it was true, that at least one of the purposes of this free phone number was to help ILLEGAL aliens get paid LEGAL wages.

She said she would have to forward my concern to an appropriate representitive and they would call me back with an answer.  I was on hold for 5 minutes and it took 5 minutes or so for her to ask me all my contact info.  I assume it will be at least another 5 minutes once someone calls back.  So I will have consumed 15 minutes of valuable time and involved two government employees just to ask a simple question.

I think every Legal citizen of the United States of America should call this number and ask for themselves and COMPLAIN once they verify that is what they are doing.  The calls are taped, so hopefully someone will listen to them......(well its the government, that may be too much to ask)  Lets keep em busy answering to us anyway!

Okay, so I've been trying to put some logic into this rather inane thread and it just isn't fitting.  I'm all for treating criminals as if they are criminals, but some of this is not making any sense.

Can it possibly be that some of us don't understand that a part of the illegal alien problem has been the motivation of individuals and employers to pay illegal workers under the table and less than minimum wage; that they can get away with it because of the implied or explicit threat of exposing the illegal aliens?

Is it at all possible that someone truly believes that the problem will be helped by allowing employers to pay illegal aliens less than they pay American citizens for the same work?

Is it more than likely that some folks are so anxious to be angry that if the right (or wrong) person recites the Declaration of Independence or the twenty-third Psalm that those folks will react in ire?

Totally agree    I doubt anyone on this board likes the illegal alien problem but I doubt any would care IF they were coming legally.  Equal pay for equal work should not have to be explained.  Remove the incentive and/or enforce punishment and the illegals would NOT be getting our jobs.  I've never talked to anyone that thought illegals were equal to us in performing work.  They ARE willing to do work we think we are too good to perform and they will do it for less.  There lies the problem.

Willow, you made a wise statement here, one that give great credit to a Government that hasnt shown its trying to REALLY solve this problem more than they are trying to benifit from the ultimate outcome.  Lets say you are exactly right in the motivation for the minimumm wage thing.  That is still a very passive aggresive approach to a serious problem that demands proactive, multilevel enforcement of only laws already on the books.  To concede that the illegals are going to hold these jobs is a cop out.  To try to "encourage" businesses to hire U.S. citizens by makeing them pay equal wages is wimpy.

Now, (and I will be asking this question if and when I get a return call)  If the government uses information on employers gathered by workers trying to demand higher pay to press charges, assess fines and shut down operations that are in violation and then assist illegals in a safe and smooth transition back to their place of origion, then Id day its a brilliant strategy.  If its just a hand out to "friendly" aliens and a prayer that less employees will be willing to pay the wages, then its no where near a strategy at all...its just playing games. Fine the employers $25K for every illegal in their employment and that would be the end of undocumented workers.  Register the illegals and then tax them just like we get taxed - - income, SS, and Medicare.  Then send them back in 3 yrs.  That should help the deficit.

When I was 16 yrs old I had a decent job at a family owned Mexican restaurant. I was secure at the job because A few of us were good help and usually told such . Pretty soon every one working there (other than 3 of us rednecks and 4 KNOCK OUT BEAUTIFULL college girl waitresses ) were family members and only 4 out of 27 were here legally! 6 or 10 would be in jail at any given time and they would hire more highschool kids to fill in. But it seemed wrong that my piers were all fired ,2 at a time because they worked only 30hrs a week,when ever one of the family members got out of jail. Illegal residents and yet they ALWAYS walked out the jail and back to work to displace a couple hard working Americans just trying to make temp wages for date money and buy the prom dress that daddy couldnt afford.. I worked hard and long,letting my school work suffer just to keep the job while the illegals ate for free,took time off any time they wanted to ( and I would skip class to fill in) only to find that family got paid a healthy SALARY even when they were in JAIL!

I'm going to ignore that you switched positions after my post.  That is to say that before you seemed to indicate you were angry because of the action the government had taken, but now you seem to be saying you're angry because the government didn't do enough.

I will address what you think would be "brilliant" on the government's part.  If a violation reported by an alien results in the termination of his employment and his deportation then we're right back where we started.  Under that brilliant strategy the alien is once more afraid to make noise and the employer is free to pay under the table and less than minimum wage.

As I said in my previous post, I'm really having a hard time finding any sense of what's been put forward here unless, of course, it's all about feeling and not at all about logic.    

I really do need to unhook from this discussion.  I try, for obvious reasons, to stay aloof of these pseudo political arguments.

That would just leave us with MILLIONS of UNEMPLOYED Illegals living here and getting more benefits because they are poor and unemployed. And that is the BEST case scenario...they will probably just turn to crime to sustain themselves and the extended family.   If they want to work..let them work. Paying them to stay is NOT going to help either!   As our economy worsens and unemployment rises those legal citizens SHOULD have to decide to take the jobs that "only a Mexican" would do..OR THEY SUFFER ! Ok Willow, Ill let you do a hit and run....so this is just a general statement no reply needed, this is my opinion, no need for flames....I didnt switch anything.  I was (am) angry that the Government and so many Americans cant seem to get their head wrapped around that little word ILLEGAL.  We shouldnt be spending government resources to aid illegal workers.  The government should be focused on their job even if its unpopular or will make them look like the bad guys.
